Hi, I have a question regarding the Organic Chem 2 requirement. At my school, I understand that a lot of Medical schools will take the Biochem course as a substitue for Organic 2.
-Would pharmacy schools have the same substitution policy?

Also are the Economics and Speech classes hard requirements, I haven't taken them and won't have much space to take them before graduation, Would it be ok if I took them at CC over the summer?

Basically, I am missing Econ, Speech, Orgo 2, and anatomy. I, however have taken biochem so I am wondering if I will still have to take Organic 2.

The requirement is Organic Chem. II, and AFAIK, you can't substitute it at all. That sounds like a very specific school-particular question though, so maybe you could cough up what schools you're applying/planning to apply to and veterans around here can help you with that school.

Economics and Speech are not "hard" for a lot of people, but you should know that it all depends on your ability in the subjects, the professor you draw, and a whole myriad of other variables. I don't think there'll be a problem taking them at a CC since they aren't science courses and thus you will not look like a "science dodger."

For me, Speech was super-easy. I love talking and presenting in front of people and I am skilled in knowing both sides of an argument and presenting from either way. I do not get nervous around crowds/audiences and I am not embarassed when speaking loudly or officially. If you're more of an introvert, of course it'll be more difficult for you to adapt to the content. That's a judgment only you can make. As far as Economics go, it was by the grace of Allah alone that I got an A- in that class, because I hated it. While not the most difficult course I ever had, it was the least enjoyable for me, and a HUGE snooze fest. Again, would it be that way for you? Impossible for me to say.

ret09, you are an ignorant fool,

there are many medical schools that accept Biochem in place of Organic 2 and I know this for a fact and I don't think anyone would consider any of them "crummy".

I posted this topic, so that someone who actually knows what their talking about would respond, please keep your ignorant thoughs and posts to yourself, if you don't know, you don't know, no need to respond.

Hell, if you're that lazy that you couldn't type "pharmacy requirements" into google, I'll save you the trouble of clicking the link: No, you can't substitute biochem for Organic II. That would be ridiculous.

Well, he knows what the requirements are (he knew about Orgo II) he just wants to know if he can get around taking Orgo II because his schedule is tres dificile!

I have a friend who is attending UT in the fall. He told me you can substitute an upper level biology class in place of Biochem 2 there. No, it's not the same. Yes, organic 2 is pretty much universally required. But give the guy who asked this question a break. It's not like he asked "Where's my bellybutton?" or something. It's a legitimate thought but I bet that most schools will not go for it unless there are some pretty extreme circumstances.

I'm actually amazed that you could take Biochem before taking Organic 2. That would not fly at my university.

ret09, learn some manners.

i probably would have been confused in biochem if i had not done orgo 2 first. as for biochem 2, it ties a lot into molecular cell bio and molecular genetics, but it's still not the same. it's great if you have them both, but don't think that having one without the other will be enough as knowing about both.

This guy is about to choose his pharmacy schools solely based on the criteria of which schools allow him to swap-out Orgo II, and I'm the ignorant fool? C'mon...

You should contact the school that you are interested in and ask them directly.

My school also allows one to take biochem after completing orgo 1. I asked a few friends who taken it without orgo 2 and they said it was doable.

God bless you??? Did you sneeze?

To the rest of the community - Remember why we come here... It isn't to trash someone (we have other forums for that). This forum is focused on getting people into pharmacy school. Name calling is counter-productive. We were all new at one point...
