I'm still attending a community college finishing up my 60 units to transfer to a 4 year university to take dental school pre reqs. I spoke with a counselor and told him my plans and he gave me a list of classes I should take in order to transfer and part of those classes were chem 110, chem 101 and 102, bio 101 and 102. However, aren't those classes I just listed pre reqs for dental school? I really don't want to take any pre reqs at a community college but I feel like I have to do so in order to fulfill my 60 units to transfer. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

There is only a few dental schools which do not take cc credits. I would highly recommend taking some of the prereqs at your cc or you will be behind and it will be a major problem in getting a degree once you transfer over to a university. Also your university may not even accept you as a transfer if you do not have some basic science classes down such as bio, chem, or calc. I took nearly all of my prereqs and they gave me a stable base to jump right into my upper division classes next year.

IMO talk to a counselor at the university you want to transfer to, learn what you need to take so you wont end up boned in a year or so.

my concern is that i heard dental schools look down upon any pre req classes taken at a cc, i just want to know if its possible to fulfill my 60 units to transfer without having to take any major courses such as chem and bio. For example can i substitute another science course rather than bio and chem and leave the major classes for the 4 year university I will definitely look into speaking with a counselor at the university im planning on transferring to thank you for that idea.

If you need them to transfer, then you need them to transfer. But if you can sub them for non dental pre-req courses so you can take them at a 4 year university you should. However, that track may put you in a position of not graduating on time depending on if you have semester sensitive courses (Orgo 2 at my school is only offered in the spring). You can finish all your pre-reqs within 2-3 years (depending on if you take summer classes as well).

I didn't start my pre-reqs till my senior year, and was able to finish the bulk of all the pre-reqs (besides biochem and microbio) in 2 years (+summers)

It's true that some dental schools don't like CC credits. However, if you get A's at the university and A's at the community college, they won't even think twice about your cc credits. Just stay on the ball.

As jHoon mentioned, its not worth delaying your application by a year / graduating late to accommodate TUFTS and other like minded universities. You're tacking on more debt, losing a years income, and losing returns on your investments for everything year you delay.
