Pre-reqs for pharmacy

Hello Everyone,

I am a graduate from a 4 year college. Took pre-med pre-reqs and did horrible. I am interested in Pharmacy school and want to re-take my pre-reqs for pharmacy school. Due to financial problems, I can take them in a community college....is it okay to repeat my pre-reqs at a community college?
any advise would be appreciated.

Truck driving school looks pretty good around this time of year... I'd google some schools to see when classes start.
 
How badly did you do? If you're applying to PharmCAS schools, be aware that they will average all attempts at a course.

The issue of re-taking your pre-reqs at a CC might be offset by the fact that you've completed a bachelors. If you do pursue this, though, you would have to make sure you got nothing but A's. I say this because a) you're taking the courses for the second time and b) you're taking them at a CC, which schools might view as being easier.

You'll do yourself no favors if you retake these courses and only get B's.

Hey guys, this is my first post so please take it easy on me. Im a newbie to this pharmacy thing. I am a real late bloomer (better late then pregant I always say), 29 to be exact. It wasnt untill recently that I decided a career in pharmacy was for me so im just starting my prereqs. UNMorBust (and others if you wanna jump in), the link wasnt working when i clicked on it. Are you saying its not a good idea to go to a community college for your pre reqs? That is what im planning on doing starting this fall, im going to CNM... i cant afford UNM right now, and was planning on waiting to add to my student loans (have some loans from when i was going to ITT-tech..big wast of time and money but thats another subject) untill Pharm school becuase thats when ill need to stop working and use the loans to live.
Will UNM (or any school for that matter) look down at CNM? Even if im able to get strait As they still would look down on it?

That's what I did for the majority of my pre-reqs. Now I am at a university. Most schools don't put too much emphasis on where you take your pre-reqs (although that school's reputation may come into question). The most important thing is to complete the pre-reqs with pretty good grades. Some schools would prefer that you take the courses at a university but it's not the deciding factor. If you have a degree then it's even better for you in terms of being more competitive. Money is a big factor to consider when taking pre-reqs.

The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program consists of a 3-4 professional plan. The first three years of prepharmacy courses may be completed at the University of New Mexico or at any two- or four-year college.

CNM is a great starting point.(I am a current CNM student.👍)
Also ITT is a hugh waste of time and money. I work with a few people who are graduates who are 20k in debt and could not find a job in there field.
Most schools seem to not mind CC pre-reqs, but you should contact any school you wish to attend.

There are actually a few pharmacist i know currently who attended only CNM for pre-reqs.

That is of course before they implemented the 3-4 program. The reason this will be a different is because CNM does not offer some of the higher lever courses like Biochem. So you will have to atleast attend 1 semester at UNM.

I hope you do attend UNM. It will be the cheapest COP you can attend. Plus it is a very decent program.

I am on my way to pharmacy school this year go 2014! 🙂 Anyway, pre-reqs for the pharmacy schools, about ten, that I applied to were generally the same, the key is to make SURE that whatever courses you take will actually transfer to the pharmacy school as a pre-req, ie: some schools require microeconomics, other schools just want you to take an economics course, micro or macro. Besides that I am sure you will be fine. FYI: good grades do not equal acceptance into pharmacy school. You need to be well rounded and have a combination of decent PCAT scores, GPA, essay etc. (Or so I have been told!) Just my two cents...Good luck!

No, you're right, I've never lived in Brooklyn, but I have lived in NY. I know how the people of Brooklyn can be. Just saying, in your case... can't take a joke-much?

As long as the pharmacy school to which you are applying accepts CC credit, then absolutely you can take classes at a CC and then apply to pharmacy school. Be aware that in many geographic locations, though, you'll be competing against people with BA/BS degrees and many of them will have degrees in science, and therefore will have completed the pre-requisites at a generally-agreed-upon more rigorous institution.

:laugh: Harlem is like 75% soft like terry cloth, the other 25% i wouldnt want to get caught walking there alone though haha. And certain parts of BK are a lot more dangerous. They do say "if you can make it in NY, you can make it anywhere." :laugh::laugh: Dont know how much truth that holds haha
