Hello SDNers,

I have a question about my pre-req units. I went to UCLA and took all my pre-reqs needed to graduate. The thing is, I am 0.6 hours short of the 8.0 hours of Inorganic chem needed which is ridiculous. These are the chemistry courses I took with number of units in parentheses (Quarter hours / Semester hours):

Chem 14A (4.0/2.7) - Atomic and Molecular Structure, Equilibria, Acids and Bases
Chem 14B (4.0/2.7) - Thermodyanimcs, Electrochem, Kinetics, and Organic Chem
Chem 14BL (3.0/2.0) - General and Organic Chem Lab 1
Chem 14C (4.0/2.7) - Structure of Organic Molecules
Chem 14CL (4.0/2.7) - General and Organic Chem Lab 2
Chem 14D (4.0/2.7) - Organic Reactions and Pharmaceuticals
Chem 153A (4.0/2.7) - Biochemistry: Structures, Enzymes, and Metabolism
Cheml 153L (4.0/2.7) - Biochemical Methods

AACOMAS classifies Chem 14A, B, and BL is inorganic chem, which gives me only 7.4 out of the 8.0 hours needed for inorganic chem.

I don't know how to get 0.6 hours of inorganic chemistry to satisfy this requirement. I'm looking at community college chemistry courses, but I don't think there is anything I can get credit for since I've already taken general chemistry at UCLA. What do I do??

Any advice would be very, very much appreciated.

Sounds rough... I have no idea but good luck.

Have you called AACOMAS? That would be my first step.

Sorry to necro-bump this thread, but I'm planning to attend UCLA Extension next quarter. Was there a resolution from OP on this?

What I understand is that UC Berkeley and UCLA both have unique chemistry sequence.
In Berkeley, you are advised to take only 4 units (!) of Inorganic/General Chemistry.
https://career.berkeley.edu/Medical/PrepPrereq
In here, if any medical school does not accept this unique chemistry sequence, you must contact the pre-health advisor.

UCLA doesn't have any pre-health advisor at all. UCLA claims "UCLA is not responsible for coursework being accepted by recipient schools. Students should contact the individual schools directly."
So this might be a tough case. But a lot of UCLA students get accepted to many medical schools.

If I were you, I would take courses at SMC or other CCs. I'm spending an extra year at CC just to finish pre-requisites 😀
I've read many stories of how CC credits aren't scrutinized.
It'll save you $$ and give you more room to study for a subject.

Thanks. From what I read in this forum, UCLA Extension is not as difficult as CC. Also, at CC it's $150/class vs $400/class at UCLA Extension. So the difference it's not too much. Nonetheless, I'm currently looking at SMC too. Making a decision soon.

No, the last time I checked, one Chem course from UCLA EXT costs around $925.
Plus other fees, it'd be around $950 I believe.
CCC has a benefit called Board of Governor fee waiver, and I take courses for free.
I'd do CC if I were you, but if you are afraid that CC credits are scrutinized, then it's fine to go to UCLA EXT.
Gotta save money for me, if money isn't a trouble for you, then I guess it's good to take it at UCLA.

Yes, that's about right from what i saw on the cost on their catalog. How much does it cost for a chem class at SMC?

If you are a California resident, Board of Governor fee waiver will give you free education at CC.
This is the only reason why I recommend CC.
I'd recommend LATTC if you are trying to take from first General Chemistry.
SMC, PCC, LACC, El Camino.. all of these colleges have one chemistry course pre-reqs.
LATTC lets you take Chemistry 101 (first General Chemistry) without any pre-reqs.
However, I believe it's around $ 268 per units for non-residents. If you are a non-resident, go for UCLA.

I see, so taking course at UCLA would make sense..

That depends on one's situation. SMC is still cheaper vs UCLA Extension. It's also possible your income or special situation merits acceptance to BOGFW. I'm a non-trad student, so my income wouldn't make the cut-off.

Yeah, you haven't told me if you were resident of California or not..
It's $46 per unit for residents and $268 per unit for non-resident.
LACCD schools (LACC, Pierce, LATTC, etc.) are $46 too.
It'd be around $230 for 5 units of General Chemistry, plus other fees it'd be around $250.
1/4 of the price, it's a bargain 🙂
