Hi,

I'm currently a 4th year about to graduate in May at UC Berkeley. I'm pre-pt and I'm majoring in Nutritional Sci; most pre-req PT classes overlap with my major but not all. I do plan on re-taking 1-2 classes and taking a couple more at a CC in the next two years. Does it matter which CC to go to? I'd like to go to the one close to home. I've heard from career advisors that it matters which CC that I take these classes because some graduate schools won't accept the credit. Also, when would it be best to register/enroll at a CC? I don't really know how this works. I've been looking up post-bacc programs but they all seem to be directed towards pre-med students.

Any help would be fantastic!

This is a tired subject. A lot of pt schools accept cc credit, some don't. You need to find out about each individual program. If they accept cc credit, it doesn't matter what cc you go to to get it done at. As far as when to register for cc classes....can't you find that info on the cc's website? If you're wanting to take them this summer, I'd imagine their registration period is already open. I'm not sure how it works with cc as far as being accepted first or if you can just sign up post-bacc.

While it does not matter what CC you go to, I would double check with the PT schools you are interested in to ensure they will accept the coursework from a CC. I haven't heard of anyone yet opposed to it or weighing it differently but I am a firm believer in research and making informed decisions. I have taken a majority of my prereqs as postbacc classes at a CC. I work fulltime and its more flexible this way. As for when to apply check the website. Admissions to a CC works just like a 4 year they have deadlines that must be met. The only difference would be what status you choose (degree seeking or post-bacc/non-degree seeking). Just a heads up be prepared to find some way to cover the cost of the classes. There isn't federal aid for postbacc/non-degree seeking students.

I took all of my pre-recs at CC, and got into almost all the schools I applied to. It wasn't a problem at all. No one ever asked me about it in interviews either. I think all that matters is the grades you get in the classes.

I took A&P at a community college and it does not matter to PT schools which CC I attended. I'm assuming that you're going to be applying to some cali schools since you're from UC Berkely. None of the cali schools ever gave me trouble with the CC I went to nor did they question it. I would go to the CC's website and see when the registration dates open for each semester and sign up asap. A lot of CC's are impacted and I had to go to at least five different CC's until I found one that had an open seat for my anatomy class. Good luck!👍

Your career advisor may be referring to unaccredited CC's. Being from the SF Bay Area, there are many trade schools who mirror themselves as public CCs. These schools are not regionally accredited. Attending a public CC is fine. Check with your programs of choice to see what their preferences are.

As long as the courses at the CC are transferable to a 4 year University, you should be fine.
