Pre-Residency Ophtho?

Hi everyone! I'm a neurotic M1, fascinated with ophtho. We are essentially given the opportunity to "design our own 4th year" (lmfao) and I was wondering if there are any pre-residency ophtho research available for students who don't have their MD degree yet? Essentially like a research year but without the gap? I was wondering how to find these programs (I see some of them listed on SDN) and what to aim for. Essentially I don't have a home program and while we do have MDs on staff they are not "as influential" (i hear connections and network is critical). Thanks!
