Hey everyone just joined SDN, wanted to see if I could get some useful information on this website! I'm a freshman (but plan to graduate in 3 years) majoring in biology. I got a 3.8 my first semester and I'm shadowing an oral surgeon and volunteering for Hospice. I was wondering what are some other good tips for boosting my application, as well as what my DAT scores should be to get into NOVA (I think thats where I'm most interested in going). Thanks.

Well first off, welcome to the site 🙂.

Now, to address your questions, you want to be as involved as possible at your school. Join your pre-dental club, different societies etc. Try and do some volunteering at different places in your area and get around to shadowing some general dentists if you can. You also want to try and take advantage of any research opportunities that might be available to you.

Now as far as the DAT, you always want to aim high, like 21+. If you keep your GPA around where you have it and have a decently colorful application you should be in good shape.

Oh yeah, and have fun in college, you have the rest of your life to do what you want, enjoy the time it takes you to get there 🙂.

Good luck!

Keep shadowing and keep track of the hours.
Keep up the good GPA, the higher the better
Plan out your schedule. For example, plan when your going to study for the DAT or take the kaplan class.
Its never too early to get close to professors. At the very least get them to connect your name and grade to your face.
Become the president of an organization and take it in a different direction. It shows leadership and is also volunteer work.

Hope this helps.

i agree with all the advice so far, but have to give my two cents about my experience. volunteering is VERY helpful on the application, but not entirely necessary. I got into Nova without volunteering, and my GPA was not as competitive as I would have liked it to be. I did work all the way through school, as a biology lab TA and as a server (at the same time, both to pay the bills!) so I did not really have time to volunteer. I think schools can tell if you are a hard worker, and that really helps (duh). I am NOT saying that you shouldn't volunteer, but don't stress if you don't have time to fly to sub-saharan africa to educate village children about the importance of oral hygiene. Work hard and you will be golden. Oh, and

-keep the grades up
-kick the DAT in the nuts
-keep busy and involved with your school and the dental profession
-practice consoling your mom as she starts crying on the phone when you tell her that you got into dental school👍
