PreDents.com: MAJOR change coming...want opinions

Hello faithful subjects,

I found myself with a little time on my hands so I decided to implement some communication between the users of PreDents.com.

It will either be one of two options or maybe a combo of the two:

#1) PM system from one user to another. All the bells and whistles will be present with the PM logs and replies. This system will have auto email notification as well as an option to disable PM's..which you will be able to see on the users info page.

#2) A comment log attached to each user that is filled with comments/questions posted by other registered users. This log can be seen by everyone. Auto notification will also be present. The user can reply to any/all comments and/or questions at their leisure. Strict control will be in the hands of the user and no post will appear until it has been approved. This feature will also have the ability to be disabled.

In all honestly, I like both ideas. I want to know which one you want more and any concerns you might have. Both projects will take a long time to do since I'm still in dental school.

but i was wondering since you just listed interviews by date, could you also list acceptances and rejections. It would be really helpful since every time I go to check a school of interest and see someone was accepted/rejected I have to go through the whole list.

How about when you scroll over a name, the school where the individual is ATTENDING would also appear....

I think both your proposals would make nice additions.

Well, unfortunatley that would require separate queries for each of the divisions...(int, accept, reject..etc) which would make the page load a lot slower. I had to pick one criteria to sort by and the date of the interview was the logical choice. Since people want to know the time line of the applicant..the dates of interest are from the time of interview and whatever happened next. If you see the rollovers now (I just did this) it shows all pertinent dates that you might want to know. For example...on the Interviewed section..not only do you see if that applicant got accepted or rejected, the date of that rejection or acceptance is also in the pop up.

I hope this makes your searching a more pleasurable one 🙂

Interesting Idea since it would be nice to know that although the individual got accepted to a school and there is no blue dot next to their name, this does not mean that they decided on another school.

I assume a popular thing to see is people accepted to"your" school but are attending elsewhere? Is that correct?

Doesn't seem that complicated and I'll see if I can whip it out real quick.

Although I certainly appreciate all suggestion to make the website better, this thread was created to get feedback on the proposed major changes.

The sooner I get that feedback, the sooner I can give it to you guys and the next cycle of dental hopefuls.

Also I think you either need to update the ADEA Official Guide to dentistry numbers you have listed from the 45th edition, or take them down completely. They're very misleading. Like NYU for example is listed as a cGPA of 3.29 a sGPA of 3.16 and a 19 DAT. Where in the book that was published last year it was a cGPA of 3.54, sGPA of 3.53 and a DAT or 20. The competition has gotten so fierce so fast that those numbers you have are just putting out bad info at this point.

I like the first idea... not so sure on the second one. It would be awesome to contact other predent's with questions when we have all their information right in front of us, but I don't know how useful a 'wall' would be...

Also... I just noticed the dots next to people's names so you can see who got rejected, accepted, etc. AWESOME idea. I don't know how long ago you set that up, but it's fetchin' awesome. Thanks a ton!

the first idea is okay but the second might give me more incentive to join up.

In the long term, would it be possible to have members select what their major is (or what area of study they are in)? and have it be part of the member search?

First I want to thank you for maintaining the website, it is a great tool for us all.

I really like those options you mentioned, they would be good assets. #2 sounds best

I have another idea,
I've noticed that many people do not update their profiles.
For instance, some individuals post their schools and their interview dates, but they do not post their acceptances or rejections. This is not to say that they did not get in, but they probably did get in but forgot to update their predents profle because there's probably like a hundred things going on with their lives at that moment. So my idea is that the site can send a notification email (one or two times) to remind the individual to update their profile. This email can be sent after the cycle is complete.

I think it would be a good way to fill in the data gaps that exist on the site

Number two please! It also gets rid of repeated questions (hopefully), as everyone can see the answers to the questions already asked.

What might also be nice (if you have the time) is if there could be more options for the results (accepted off waitlist, withdrawn after interview invite but before attending interview.. but in different words), and maybe one or two lines to explain the decision. I realize we can already kind of do that, but I think more people would be apt to explain if there were designated spots to put the info.

And I know many people have said it already, but a serious thank you and an imaginary bouquet of flowers is in order. So thanks. Use your imagination for the flowers. I bought tulips.

Yes i get a bunch of them too, but this is a forum and that is pretty much the reason for the forum, for the pre-dent community to help eachother out.

Both are AWESOME ideas. I wish they were there when i needed them 🙄 lol But the upcoming predents will surely benefit from those ideas!
