Hi,

I am a post-bac returning to school to finish up prereqs that weren't required in my undergrad. My husband is in his thirties and I in my late twenties. After applying to dental school on June 1st 2008, I will have about a year off before dental school starts in Fall of 2009.

Since I am a little older, we are considering whether it is better to get pregnant now or wait until 3rd/4th year of dental school. If we get prenant now, I will have that year off to spend with the baby. However, we are concerned that if I am showing during interviews, it may hurt my chances even though legally they are not allowed to discriminate.

Are there any other women out there who were showing during their interviews and still got accepted?

What are your opinions on having the baby now and spending a year with it during its first year or waiting until 3rd/4th year of D school. In both situations, I have mom and mom in law to help out.

Thanks!

I have a friend that asked me the same question. Actually, I have once considered about this (we're on the same page here!). However, I decided to wait after dental school or during my last year of dental school. I figured out that a few years wouldn't make any difference. Having kid while in dental school is extremely difficult. ESPECIALLY THE FIRST 2 YEARS WILL BE HELL!! many of my friends said. If your husband and kid will be living with you while you are in d school, then you cannot focus to do well. If they are not living with you, then you will missing out so many things. One friend of mine was also regret for having kid while going to school full-time. She claimed that she doesn't have time for her kid. She missed seeing her kid first learned to walk or talk. Just wait if you CAN!!!

There was a woman in one of my classes (undergrad) last semester who was about 8 mos pregnant when she interviewed and she got accepted 1st round at a particular school.

I had my three children while being in college, thank God I did not have morning sickness. It is a very hard work. I also think that having a family while being in school deprived me of time to study and it showed in my grades. I had good grades but I could not get all "A"s. If you can wait my suggestion to wait and believe me I know what I am talking about. Dental school is very difficult and your performance is crucial. If you have good stats you may get in even being pregnant but that will put and enormous burden on you as a mother, unless you are going to have a nanny twenty four seven.

I was pregnant this summer and I took my DAT and attend to all my interviews with my big belly and I got accepted to 2 out of 5 interviews.
The only thing that all schools asked me was " who is going to take care of your baby when you are in school?" So if you convince them you have somebody at home that takes care of your baby, you will be fine.
I think it is better to have your baby before school or after rather than while you are in school.
Now I am enjoying my baby until JULY.
GOOD LUCK.

We pondered the same question last summer (I'm 29) and decided to wait until 3rd year at the EARLIEST. The first 2 years of school are going to be hard enough already!

Navy, thanks for sharing your experiences. Yes, many times I mentioned that I've heard from my friends. I actually forgot to add something which I thought I did. As for me, I have a little sister. I left home for school since she was 3 months old. She is now 4 years old. I won't said that I regret for left my family but I would said that I felt bad for not seeing them grow up. It hurt me real bad everytime I think about it. I love my small siblings very much as they are my own kids. I am 20 and 22 years older then them. Now, you can say that I am sentimental and I won't fight you. You are right about individual's aptitude. There are always "Yes" and "No" situations. If anyone believes that they can have kids while in D school, then GO for it!! I won't underestimate the D school.
