Hi Everyone,

Wanted to know from your experience. IMG with chance to do prelim year at JH. Probably gonna be 2 prelim years.
My aim is to secure Categorical General Surgery position afterwards, in-house or else where. What do you think my chances are?

Your advice appreciated

Very unlikely to stay there as categorical but pretty good chances of matching elsewhere as PGY2/3. I would consider it one of the best prelim options.

That's weird. The residents there told me that most of their prelims in the last 5 years were able to secure categorical positions elsewhere. Sounded like a good record to me

This is something that is easy to record hard data on. If a program/entity doesn't have it on hand, it is slightly suspect that things aren't as rosy as they make it out to be.

I agree with you. Do you think it's ok if I contact the coordinator if she can send me some kind of data?

A few years ago Hopkins was approved to increase their number of graduates to 7 from 6. They now continue to match 6 categoricals per year and keep the seventh position open for one of their prelims to stay on (although I have no idea if that is to continue or is on a year by year basis). Over the last several years nearly every prelim has matched to a categorical position somewhere. There are a couple here and there that choose, on their own accord, to go into another specialty (IR or plastics, for example). Some specific programs include Colorado, UCSD, UT Houston, UTSW, Oklahoma, South Alabama, to name a few. Currently, there are four categoricals in house that started as prelims. Hope this information is helpful.

We’ve taken several folks out of the JH prelim program as categoricals and they’ve all done well

It’s a big program with well-connected faculty who will help high performers get a spot. Not sure about The chances of staying there
