Hey, was wondering if I could get some advice from you guys.

I just started my 4th year as DO student. Step 1 244, Step 2 CK 266, pursuing PM&R

I'd like to do a Transitional Year but understand that these are very competitive. With my stats, do you guys think it would be okay if I only ranked TY programs or should I also rank some prelims. If so, how many would be adequate? Thanks

Good stats, but I would hit some prelims too. TY's may have tunnel vision on the typical applicants they've taken in the past, i.e., rads, ophtho, derm, etc. You may well snag one but better safe than sorry.

Dude, you're golden. With your stats, you should be okay with applying to 10 programs. I don't see how you could fail to get a transitional year spot. The reason they're usually hard for PM&R folks is that the vast majority of us don't have anything like your stats.

The only thing I'd add is that since there's a flat fee for the first 10 of each type of program that you apply to, if you're going to add even once prelim program to your list, you might as well apply to 10, since you'd be paying the same fee regardless.

Not sure if this is clear, but if you applied to 10 TY and 1 prelim, it would be the same cost as 10 TY and 10 prelim programs. You could do that if you don't feel safe with just 10 TY.

Some prelim med spots are fairly easy years. With your stats I think you will be fine but I'd rank 3-4 prelims to be sure. If you look at match outcomes the %of unmatched US seniors is quite high, and the process can be a crapshoot.
