    I need some urgent advice.

By getting a preliminary spot could I apply for a categorical IM next year, what options do I have.

Long term goal is Endocrinology, but not necessorily.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Quite a few people have done prelims and moved into a PGY-2 slot. I asked a PD about this once and she said that it's usually not a problem, though most of the time they can't guarantee you a position. It depends on institution, but if you work hard and they like you, you chances are pretty good...but I'm sure that there would be open spots elsewhere you could pick up, too.
