preliminary Internal Medicine, H1B visa

some one please help me, i need to know whether residency programs offering a preliminary year PGY1 in Internal Medicine that accept IMGs will sponsor H1B visas or they only sponsor J1 visas?
I looked for the answer of this question all over the web and couldn't find it.
Please tell me if you know and your imput is much appreciated.

if they are an academic institution they have unlimited supply of H1b visas.

From what I have seen J1 visas are used by institutions that are malignant or are afraid of you leaving.

for example MIT (non medical) makes all their post-docs use J1 visas. This way they have to return to their country before they can work in the US. I personally think it is not very nice.

yes, it is possible to get an H1B visa for a one year position as long as it is with an academic institution. If it is not, it is my understanding that they are all currently sold for this year as of March 28th.

If it is only for one year why not get a J1 visa? There is soo much more paperwork for a H1B visa than a J1 visa and now that the institution has to post H1B information I think it causes internal problems with some.

If you all ready have a position (via match) and the institution is an academic institution it should be very easy (as far as visas go) to get an H1b visa or J1 visa. If the academic institution does H1b visa that should be relatively easy too. It is not a problem except for the paperwork and rules.

thanx for the useful information, i dont want a J1 visa because i dont want to go to another country for two years after i complete residency, and i dont want to go through psychological stress and waist money in going through a J1 waiver program and work in crapy location for 3 years...etc, so i want to get the H1B from the start so for my permanent peace of mind.

yup! i think somebody asked the same question in the IM forum. you can ask even before you apply to eras if they're willing to sponsor an h1. it changes per year too, so don't go relying on words of mouth. if you have particular needs, you really need to do the research

if you're on F1 currently, why not do OPT for PGY1?

If he is not a student in the US, he won't be on F-1 and can't do OPT for PGY1. But if he IS, that would definitely be a good option.
