thatguyagain said:As in incoming MSI striving to become a surgeon, I have one simple question.
What is the deal with the Prelimiary Surgery residency?
It sounds to me like it is the equivalent of limbo. Should it be feared?
Misterioso said:Prelim surgery is either designated or undesignated.
Designated prelims have another residency (for example ENT, ortho, anesthesiology) already lined up to enter after they complete their prelim year.
Undesignated prelims don't have another residency lined up to go into after their 1-2 prelim years. They use their prelim residency to hopefully transfer into a categorical surgery position at the same program or another program.
So designated prelims are not in "limbo" since they have a residency to go to after their prelim year, but undesignated prelims can be thought to be since they're not guaranteed anything after their prelim year is over.

The other less attractive way out of this limbo is to find another categorical position in a different program.
