I am an IMG applying to PMR. I was just offered a prematch for a preliminary year of internal med. Since I only had 4 prelim interviews, I am very tempted to take this offer. My question is: can i take the prematch offer for prelim year and still go through the match for the PGY2 position...would this work out in the match system? can i just create a list for the PMR programs and not make a list for prelim year? or would it mess up my PGY2 match? If anyone knows anything about this, I would greatly appreciate your help as I have tried to look everywhere for an answer. Thanks!

Not a problem. You can still go for advanced PGY-2 positions through the match. Just rank advanced programs – you can’t rank categoricals if you take a prelim prematch. You won’t need to submit supplemental ROLs. Come match day, you will (hopefully) get a message stating “Congratulations, you have matched!”.

thanks for your help Ludicolo! one more question: wont it be a problem if the PGY2 program I match into sees that I didnt match for a PGY1 position? Do I need to tell NRMP why I'm leaving the supplemental list blank? Thanks again for your reply!

Again – not a problem. You don’t need to tell NRMP anything, just submit your single ROL of advanced programs. The PGY2 program won’t “see” that you didn’t rank or match into a prelim. At some point you’ll notify them where you’re doing your prelim year. If they find out that you aren't doing a prelim (let's say you didn't match and failed to scramble for a prelim), then you'll have to relinquish your PGY2 spot. But because you prematched ahead of time, you’re all set.
