hey, i posted this in urology as well but it applies here also: can i be a urologist or ob/gyn and only perform sterilizations and abortions? how much can i earn that way? is it a permissible way to conduct medical practice? not morally but legally. lastly, but also importantly, can i be selective about who i see? im serious about all of this--any answers are appreciated

That sounds both unprofitable and boring. But I guess you can do whatever you want provided you have funds to start your own clinic called "tubals & abortions R us".....

i think it sounds fun, but im curious about the profitability and feasibility. id do it using govt money maybe, like subsidized abortions (dunno if they subsidize sterilizations). but i suspect it would take volume to make decent money

seeing as many patients may be young teenagers, maybe that clinic name wouldnt be so bad

In the U.S. urogyn or urologist are not licenced to do tubals or D&C's this is not an experience you would typically get in residency. OB/GYN'S OR FP THAT HAVE PRIVILEGES CAN DO THESE PROCEDURES

A year ago I saw this special on the O'Reilly factor about an OB/GYN in Kansas whose practice consisted of abortions. He preformed abortions on teenagers, adults, etc. The factor estimated his salary was anywhere from 900k-2 mil. No joke.

wow, pretty inspiring. im wondering if its possible to do all of the following as a doc:
sterilization, male and female
abortion
IVF
PGD
gene therapy

i would be a eugenic machine

You will have to do an REI fellowship after ObGyn residency.

What exactly intrigues you about abortions and tubals that you would make an entire practice out of them? Tubals are usually done post-partum by the same doc who did the prenatal care and delivery. No one is gonna call you in specifically to do this procedure when the attending physician of record can quickly do it and bill for it. I guess you can do non-postpartum ones.

My guess is you just want to get people on this forum riled up. But that's fine... things have been too calm around here anyway

If you are serious about your question--

One option is a family planning fellowship after ob/gyn residency. You do about 2 years specializing in contraception, abortion, sterilization, ect. You also do research, and many get their masters in public health and do international work. Right now there are only about 11 programs that have fellowships but in the next couple of years there are going to be a lot more schools with this option.

hey thanks meg, that was informative. ill do some searching on it. im genuine about this, no riling. these parts of the forums are probably more calm bc theyre more serious and mature, thats why i asked here.

but its really totally about eugenics, in a good way for society and humanity. its a subject i can talk about a lot, ive grown passionate about it. the prospect of being a eugenic doc recently occurred to me upon thinking about my future, and i think its something i could find a lot of fulfillment doing. obgyn and reproductive areas of medicine intuitively seem like the ideal place for it. genetic progress and technology should allow lots of possibilities in the future, i think it will be perhaps the most important area of medicine from the preventive side. nipping things in the bud, you know. if eugenics is defined as the improvement of the human gene pool then i think its a noble goal. of course it depends on the means but thats not really for docs to decide.
