I am debating whether I should take physics second semester of junior year; it is considered a weedout class at my school. To get a good grade, you need to spend the majority of the day, everyday, studying physics. Thus, I am thinking of taking physics II in the fall semester of my senior year so I can have more time to study for the MCAT.

I am planning to take the MCAT April and apply to medical schools in early June. If I don't take physics II in the second semester of junior, I would have more time study the MCAT and score significantly higher on the MCAT.

Would I be able to get into medical schools without taking physics II while submitting the primary application? Thank you so much for your advice! 🙂

April may be a little early to take the mcat. Most people say you want 3 months of 6 hours per day of study. A light spring semester with mcat study and then June testing I think works. Only apply to one school when you initially apply. Then the rest when you know your mcat. Not sure about physics 2 on mcat

Thanks all for your advice. I'm not worried about not knowing physics II while taking the mcat; I am more concerned that I will not have taken physics II before submitting primaries. Would it be possible to take physics II in the fall semester of junior year?

If your school offers Physics II in the fall semester, that will be fine. Pre-requisites are checked again after matriculation because of this sort of situation. I believe Temple is an exception, and requires them before application.

@cactusman Do we have to make a note that we are taking physics II on our primary application? Also are most med schools--even selective ones--okay with me taking a prereq after submitting the primaries? Will I be put at a disadvantage? Thanks so much!

You're good.
@gonnif knows the process much better and I've seen him answer similar questions before, but I believe the application asks for courses you plan to take.

I'm just talking about the physics two stuff. resistors/capacitors/ohms law/some optics/a dash of fluids. Its only a few hours worth of khan academy.
I get that, but not everyone can self-teach every subject, and physics seems to be one that is more common for people to struggle to self-teach.

It's probably better to give self-teaching it a shot, but leave time to take a physics 2 course before taking the MCAT in case you are not able to successfully teach yourself the necessary material.

I prepared for the MCAT exam while taking Physics II, and I believe it was very helpful not only for the MCAT, but also for doing well in the course itself.

If physics 2 is electricity/magnetism/all that stuff I think its actually more useful for the mcat than the force/velocity physics 1 stuff

Thanks all for your help. I'm not as concerned about taking the MCAT without physics II as I am about applying to med school without physics. Any suggestions? I appreciate the diverse opinions.
