Has anyone ever submitted their presentation for Resolution 42? How long was it? Can you give me ideas about what you said?

Thanks in advance!

Just write your letter per the guidelines on the AOA site and mention specifically why an osteopathic internship wasn't the best option for you. It took me about a month to get the exemption.

Thanks for the info doc. You're a wealth of information on here for us rising DOs.

Quick question: I'm doing an ACGME intern year and then allopathic ophtho in one of the infamous 5 states. My questions are:

1) Do I have to get AOA approval for my internship BEFORE starting my PGY-2 year? or will that only come into question if I want to practice after residency in the 5 states?

2) Do I "really" have to WASTE one of my elective months on ambulatory medicine/clinic to get AOA approval? I really hope not. I can't stand FP/IM out-pt stuff.

The AOA required two of the DO's in my program to do a FP rotation and do a presentation on osteopathc medicine during conference in order to Rez 42.

I refuse to do a FP rotation, so those five states can kiss my ass. Perhaps sometime in the future they'll realize how ridiculous the rotating intership requirement is and drop it. I'll be waiting.

I got my exemption after finishing residency.
As far as I know, you can do residency/fellowship training in any of the five states without doing the rotating internship. You just won't be able to get licensed there after finishing.

As far as the elective thing, I had the advantage of being in a residency with enough overlap with the AOA exemption requirements that I didn't need to do any extra rotations. To complete the educational requirement, I attended one of the large regional osteopathic conferences in the area, and didn't need to do any presentations (thankfully).

Yes, it sucks to have to do IM/FM rotations if you aren't interested, but a few weeks of torture could pay off in the long run in terms of job opportunities. Just to keep things in perspective, Resolution 42 didn't exist when I was a student, and people were doing completely unnecessary osteopathic rotating internships in order to get practice privileges in one of the five states. Maybe in the future the AOA internship requirement may change but for now we still have to play the game by the rules.
