Ok, honestly, in pre-med, etc, I never bothered to spend that much time in the morning on grooming myself. Basic essentials I did - i.e. shower, brush hair, brush teeth, so on and so forth. But I usually went to class sans make-up, or light lipstick at the most. My clothing - haha, there were times I went to morning classes in jogging clothes, etc.

Question is - when you are going to classes in medical school, do you dress up? I am guessing you need to for preceptorships, rotations, etc. Unless you are scrubbing down. But what about when you sit in class? Do you come in wearing formal clothes, make-up done, hair straightened/styled, etc? Or do you come in wearing jeans and a t-shirt? What's expected?

I have had some job experience, so I've realized now how important it is to be presentable at work, etc. Is it the same during the first two years of med school? Even the last two when you're in rotations?

Haha...a bunch of MS1s in suits, skirts, and ties in lecture. 🙂

You need non-jeans, closed-toed non-sneaker shoes (some of us do wear sneakers eventually), and shirt and tie (if male) when in hospital or clinic seeing patients.

In lecture, take every chance you get to wear your jeans and t-shirts. Be a bum while you can.

i've never once worn make-up and i don't intend to start just b/c i'm in med school.

I've had the opposite experience... in undergrad, I actually cared and looked nice. Now in med school, I just wear jeans and sweats... unless it's a preceptor day, of course.

Hi there,
I wore jeans and a tee shirt coupled with sweat shirt everyday to class. I wore scrubs in gross anatomy. When I got to third year, I dressed more professionally. Most schools do not expect you to "dress" for class unless it is a special occasion.

I was the same way. I dressed nicer in undergrad. When I got to med school, I just wore jeans, t-shirts/sweaters, sneakers, hair up in a ponytail, no make-up. When I started my third-year clerkships, and I had to dress up, I started doing my hair again, wearing make-up, accessorizing with my outfits, wearing light perfume/body spray. On rotations when I had to wear scrub (ie surgery,ob/gyn), I would have my hair up no or light make-up, etc) I have to say that I definately look better now at the end of my fourth year of med school than I did at the end of my first.
