Hi everyone,

Have any of you had to do any presentations during dental school? Just asking cuz I hate doin them.🙁

Also, I was wondering what the general learning environment is like in dental school? Is it just a ton of lecture and then hands on practice in the lab with tests and quizzes thrown in the mix? Is there homework and projects too? Thanks!

Yes, there's homework, projects, research and many, many presentations. You're expeted to research and present a patient (informal) to the faculty each time you work with a patient, and at Pacific you do many formal patient presentations, treatment planning presentation, research presentations, etc...

1st and 2nd year: mainly exams and practicals with the occasional quiz/assignment/project.

3rd and 4th year: mainly tx patients while presenting patients and cases to faculty members. these presentations may be formal or informal depending on the department, case, whether it is for a competency, etc.

sounds interesting. can you go into greater detail about the informal and formal presentations? and are the presentations only to faculty members or to classmates as well?

what about schools like NYU, BU, and etc that have large classes?

You "informally" present every patient you tx to a faculty member prior to starting the procedure. When you present a treatment plan, it's generally a bit more formal and includes a more rigorous Q&A session from the faculty member -- especially if your presentation is for a competency.

Also, each senior at our school is required to formally present a case to a large group of upperclassmen in a lecture hall before graduation.

Same as above at UOP as far as clinic. We also do formal case presentations to classes and seminar groups of our patients (more than just one, but only a few). We also have a formal presentation of a business plan that we present before our classmates and a panel of professors as well as some guests from financial institutions to get us ready for creating real business plans in the future to get loans and start our own practices. We also do some small group presentations all the time scattered randomly throughout the year in a few classes like Integrated Clinical Sciences and Human Anatomy. They are usually pretty fun and not too difficult, just group work
