What can you do to prevent burnout? A week or two of long hours can usually be managed but when it keeps going on, the cumulative effects of inadequate sleep, stress, etc. start to really take their toll. Even a "day" off does not seem to help. And often this day is spent doing laundry, shopping for food, and doing things that have been neglected because of work so it is not really a day off. Any thoughts.

welcome to residency. it's why so many residents are on anti-depressants, especially now as winter approaches.

space out your vacations ~ put them in times you know you'll need a break. mine this year were july, january, june. spread enough so that when january comes around, i'll be seeking my winter escape to the beach.

plus, do that. go to some tropical island and relax for the week. go alone, go with friends, but enjoy your vacation so you have something to keep you going as the deficit builds up again.
