I'm a sophomore undergraduate at the University of Illinois, majoring in Animal Sciences, minors in MCB and Chemistry w/ my current GPA being 3.84. I started out my college career interested in PreVet, but have begun to think that my decision was influenced because my father is a veterinarian. I am incredibly interested in medicine, so I know I want to enter the medical field and am highly considering medical school instead of vet school. I'm curious if anyone thinks that my majoring being PreVet related would detract from my application to med school?

No problem being pre-vet in the past. The prerequisites are the same from what I hear. Start volunteering in the community and getting some clinical experience in a human health center, such as a hospital or, as I highly recommend, a free, need based clinic. Your major doesn't matter, so don't worry about changing it if you like it. You GPA is great, as well.

Yeah I agree. Grades matter a lot. Your major doesn't matter so much, as long as you have the pre-reqs. I know some people who got C's in basic classes like Gen. Chem, Algebra, and Calc. The funny thing is they're still pre-med. Oh well. I guess they'll have to learn the hard way that grades matter.

I would add that you should definitely try to get some time in a clinical/hospital setting. Not only is it a core EC, but it will go a long way towards helping you choose between Med and Vet. Dealing wih other humans in pain, dying, and/or with mental illness can be very emotionally draining, and you may not want to deal with that.
Good luck!

I was prevet before becoming premed and had no problem transitioning. If you have any Humane Society volunteering, it will be equally applicable toward nonmedical community service for med school applications. Besides getting in some employment or volunteering in a clinical environment, also do some dedicated physician shadowing to get a good idea of what docs do all day. Other ECs that strengthen a med school application are research, teaching (includes TA, tutor, mentor, coach), and leadership.
