Hey there,

Currently a PGY1 in IM. I'm interested in subspecializing atm but would still be open to working as a primary care internist as a "back up."

1. What is the outlook like for primary care internists in CA?

2. What should I look out for when I do my job search as a PGY3?

3. Pros and cons if you are a current outpatient internist?

4. Interested in living in a suburban or urban area. Is there still high demand for outpatient internists in these areas?

Hey there,

Currently a PGY1 in IM. I'm interested in subspecializing atm but would still be open to working as a primary care internist as a "back up."

1. What is the outlook like for primary care internists in CA?

They exist, and they will continue to be necessary to provide primary care.

2. What should I look out for when I do my job search as a PGY3?

Really, the same things you look for in any job: Good team support and support staff, EMR that doesn't make you want to pull your hair out, coworkers who are experienced and kind and also able to provide you with guidance because being a new primary care doctor is difficult.

3. Pros and cons if you are a current outpatient internist?

No fellowship.

4. Interested in living in a suburban or urban area. Is there still high demand for outpatient internists in these areas?

Given that there are myriad suburban and urban areas in California, this is completely dependent on which area you choose and at which time you apply. In two years, the answer will be different than it is now.
