Hey! I know this isn't a techie forum, but I was wondering if anyone has any printer recommendations. Mine from 4 years ago just died and I can't even decide if I need one with scanner capabilities or not for vet school next year.

I'm really overwhelmed by the reviews and wondering if I get one for under $100 if it will mostly likely die in the next 4 years. Thoughts? Advice? How much do vet students need to scan? Do most people print out slides before class in color?

Arhhrh+pity+:boom: technology makes me anxious.
I never print out pictures. It would be for slides, papers and other?

Thanks!

FWIW--I love, love, LOVE my Epson Workforce 600. It's a fax, copier, printer, and scanner, and it comes with optical character recognition software so you can turn your (typed) scans into searchable pdfs. I no longer have a file cabinet--everything is digital. I'm taking mine to school with me.

Old threads, old threads you has them! (again. or always 😛)

No dancing in circles today though, I'm disappointed twelve! hehe

I bought an OfficeJet 6500 recently - and I love it. It does NOT print photo quality, but it (supposidly) offers some of the best ink/page value $$ of any inject.

It is wireless, so i can print from my laptop or my desktop (down stairs) and have the printer upstairs, connceted (wireless) to the network. Once its set up (setup was a breaze), it opperates just like a normal printer.

It has duplex printing (double sided), scanning, faxing, and copy (Flatbed).

Newegg has them for $150.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Order=BESTMATCH&Description=HP+Officejet+6500+

or if you don't want/need the wireless, you can get it for $100.00 (although the wireless was totally worth it IMO)

Been 4 months now, and still completely happy with it

If your tech savy, you can set it up to print via internet, so I can hit "Print" at the vet school, and when I get home, all my PP slides are printed out and ready to go.

EDIT: Damn, had to go back to IE (for school ect, and apparently there is no built in spell checker?! WTH? Well, guess everyone is goign to know what a horrible speller I am now)... How I wish website designers would start supporing chrome.

Yeah, the spell checker makes spelling a 'breeze'. 😉

I like it because I'm a typo queen... not sure if it's me or the keyboard. I also spell 'receipt' wrong every.damn.time.

I'm sure I wrote a recommendation for my printer in the thread I linked to, but I'll post it again... Lexmark x5450. Ink is reasonable, lasts a long time, it has scan/fax options, card slots for XD/SD/thumb drive, and I only paid like $50 for it.

"eye before eee, except after sea..."

Hey twelvetigers, I've been repeating that phrase since fourth grade, and I still get "receipt" and "receive" wrong, LOL. And I just discovered that "definitely" has a website dedicated to helping people spell it right. Check it out, http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com

Oh and PS, I won't be recommending my printer to anybody. Its a complete POS. I will say though that Amazon is a great place to visit if you need help deciding on what price/brand/type of printer to buy. The reviews are usually pretty helpful.

A scanner would probably come in handy at some point during your schooling. If nothing else it has been helpful for me to scan documents that need to be emailed to people, can't say that I use it too much for school purposes though.

Mainly work, bills, financial aid, and other associated issues.

I got an HP Officejet J4550 as a gift and it seems to work fine. Amazon has it for $87.95. It prints, scans, copies, and faxes.

If there's a Target near you, check out what they have. The ones in Blacksburg and the Baltimore area are both carrying a little all in one printer for fairly cheap with all their back to college stuff. I'm not sure exactly what brand it is, though.

Consumerist had a Dell all-in-one wireless printer listed in their morning deals yesterday for $49. It might be worth checking out, here is the link: http://www.buxr.com/deal/dell-v305w-all-in-one-printer_30166

I love my little, cheap printer that I actually rarely use anymore since it's cheaper to print in the library or in my lab, so it's not even with me right now. I've had it two years or so, it was around $75 (christmas present, not sure exactly) and the only problems I've had so far were some wonky printing the first few times I used it after storing it in the garage for a summer. However.

Keep in mind that you're going to have to be paying for ink cartridges also, so even if a printer seems cheap, make sure ink is reasonably priced and that you're going to be able to find it easily. There's nothing like realizing something's due the next morning and you're out of ink and there's no where close by to get the right kind or that it's super expensive.

Oooh, that's such a good point! Some printers use the individual color cartridges, which are really nice if you are a vet student because you will use the magenta color (histology slides) faster than the other colors.

See, I don't have any problems with definitely... I have to pause and think about double Cs vs. double Ms in 'recommend'... I learned both 'diarrhea' and 'vomiting' within a week at the clinic (unlike my coworker :meanie:)... I think I do pretty well for the most part, lol. P-R-E-S-T-I-D-I-G-I-T-A-T-I-O-N! Thanks Akeelah.

Okay, end hijack. 🙄

ETA: Okay, wait, one more hijack... anyone else here ever win the spelling bee? I did in the 5th grade. I couldn't spell 'photosynthesis' (I said 'photosynthesys' 🙁) so I was eliminated in state. The dude after me got 'marsh'... unfair much?

My sister went to the county spelling bee when we were in the 7th grade. I got out in the first round at our school. I missed the word veterinarian. Seriously. 🙄
