For private hospitals with pathology residency programs such as Baylor Dallas, who does the chair of the program answer to when it comes to hiring new faculty? I'm confused about the business model. Are the staff pathologists in a group that teaches residents in addition to sign out, or are they employed under the academic umbrella, "Baylor".

Thanks

For Baylor Dallas at least (as of 2010 when I interviewed there, anyway), it's a private group that had been contracting with the Baylor health system for decades. I forget the name of the group, but it didn't have the name "Baylor" in it anywhere...something like North Texas Pathology or some such thing. The PD (who was also the dept chair, I think) was one of the 2-3 partners of the group, while the other staff pathologists were simply employed by the group. Everyone in the group (partners and employed pathologists) was involved in teaching.

That's all I managed to drag out of people during my visit there.
