Can anyone recommend a good private admissions consultant? My school's advisor who I've been working with for a year had a family "set back", retired immediately and is not responding to calls or email. The interim replacements seem preoccupied and confused.

I would like to find someone who can work closely with me as I am a non-traditional student with somewhat unique, but not ideal, path to medical school. I didn't find the Kaplan advisors to be particularly informed and I'm surprised at how few private consultants are out there.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

what kind of services are you looking for? you could probably find a lot of information on SDN for free (including people to help you edit your essays, etc). you can approach people here that have had success in previous cycles. SDNers can be a helpful bunch 😀

Hey,

I have been looking for the same thing and am in touch with a few consultants right now. If you want, PM me and I'll give you my personal view on them.

I can work with you for $10 per hour. I will offer professional service.

Judith Colwell is an admissions consultant who specializes in working with non-trad students. You can find her contact information by clicking on any thread on the OldPremeds site.

The "professional service" that include subjective evaluations of essays and interviewing skills is something that professional consultants might be able to provide that SDN cannot.

However, it's probably not worth the price tag.

if you are in a community with a university or even a community college, you may be able to save a lot of money buy seeking out the help from a professor in the field of communication and rhetoric... even though those speech classes you had to take in college may have been extremely boring for some, those professors are experts at professionally presenting individuals...

these days a part time secretary can call themselves a medical school admissions consultant and take 1000s from you while only giving you anecdotal help... kind of a waste of money in my opinion...

I found free advisor(s) from NAAHP, I randomly sent emails for 5 advisors and three responded favorably and helped me. One need not pay for everything in life.

it's pretty simple:

1) good gpa
2) good mcat
3) good research
4) good lor's
5) good ps
6) good clinical volunteering

to be super special you can:

1) get a publication
2) play a sport all your life
3) play a musical instrument all your life

there i just gave you some free advice

Why hire somebody? You're in the midst of tons of people who are equally qualified as or more qualified than anyone you could pay. Slap up your questions, and we'll see what we can do.
