Is it common for dentists to open their own private practice immediately after working 4 years for the military?

Is it common for dentists to open their own private practice immediately after working 4 years for the military?

I've had a couple of friends that opened their own practice, but more of them have started as an associate. Some then went on to their own practice and some have stayed as associates.

To make a long story short, it's about 25% own practice/75% associate/partner.
