I will be starting the job search in a couple months and wanted to know some of the call systems out there so I can better evaluate which ones suites my lifestyle.

Residency is pretty brutal with 24 hour in-house call.

I've heard of some places with 3PM-7AM in-house call with post-call day off...3PM-7AM home beeper call with post-call day off, etc.

And how are weekends usually covered?

It doesnt matter what people tell you here unless youre going to apply for their group. You just have to ask the groups you interview with about the call schedule. FWIW, my group has 3 people on call per night. One in house 3p-7a in house on weekdays. 2 pager call. Weekends are 24 hours.

Not really an answer to your question, but a piece of information that I thought was useful when I ran across it.

One of the presenters at this years ASA practice management conference was a consultant who had noticed that the call schedule on paper had very little to do with the callee's happiness. i.e. he would frequently see two groups with identical schedules, one of which hated their life and the other loved it. The difference was how often cases went in the off hours.

Of course, the critical piece of data is how much is too much - and I don't have that - but keep call intensity in mind.

👍👍 Smart.

call is call. I understand that intensity matters but still. DOnt let groups tell you oh well call is not that bad. YOu should get paid for your availability.

Of course. But I sell my availability cheaper than I sell my sleep 🙂
when you sleep with one eye open, it aint that good anyway.

no but I can definatly be fresh if I've gotten 7hrs of sleep w/one eye open. Cant say the same if I've been up for 24hrs strait

Im not talking about 24 hour straight im talking about a call at 1130, an epidural at 215, and a csection at 445. your night is SHOT my friend . rpt 90 times a year. same potential scenario.
