All Input is appreciated. I am sorry if this topic has been discussed before.

My preference: Looking to do private practice, mostly interested in solid oncology and benign hematology. Ideally in private practice I would like to be able to see everything in solid oncology. I am wrestling between academic and semi academic community programs.

My question: Academic programs try and steer you towards research and picking an area of interest. Is this necessary if one is going towards private practice?
-Are most private practice groups looking to hire a subspecialist oncologist vs a general practitioner ?

Most groups are looking to hire someone who can move the meat. Go to a program that will teach you to move the meat.

exactly. choose the program where you see more patients in a good continuity clinic and have more autonomy

correct. not only they don't care about it, they might frown upon it. you can (and you probably will) have an area of interest and become the group expert in that area. But you can't advertise yourself to private groups when looking for a job as a "lung cancer expert" for ex. they still want you to treat iron deficiency anemia, breast cancer, MM and everything in between.
