any of you do it (for bio or chem classes) and if so what do you charge? I'm thinking of tutoring some people in my U....

a friend of mine who tutors (orgo, bio, or g.chem) charges $15/hr...when i tutored, a 7th grade student, i charged $10/hr...

I tutored cell bio. But I didn't charge people b/c I felt like if they really wanted to learn the stuff and I could help them, then I would. The other TA's would charge about $20/hr.

Charge according to your education level. If you are in your undergard and tutoring a university student. Charge low like 10, however if you are a PhD student who know his/her material 20-25.

Don't think cause you got an A in the course you are even remotly qualified to tutor and charge anything above a 12.

I work two jobs, and both are tutoring. I tutor for my university in a free tutoring center (I'm paid) for one, and I private tutor for the other. I charge $35/hr. If someone is in dire need, I can always adjust and work with them though, so I might charge them $25/hr instead. If they really cannot pay, I always recommend the drop in tutoring center I work at.

You guys seem really low for how much you guys charge. Around here, if you have an undergrad degree you can charge anywhere from 30-40/hr, if you have a masters you can charge 40-60/hr, and if you have your doctorate you can charge anywhere from 50-100/hr...

agreed with this, however the only caveat is that UNI kids typically can not afford regular tutoring rates, and schools usually do (and should) offer free tutoring. where you really make money is tutoring those supported by their parents (i.e. intermediate school & highschool, as well as some community college students living at home).

outside of college: minimum 25/hr.
within college: honestly i'd be happy making anywhere between 10 & 20 /hr

also some of those sites are pretty good, id check out wyzant as well.

That's true about the outside/inside school thing.

Since I have a degree in business, I tutor a lot of MBA students. That, and I tutor a lot of working professionals who work full time and take classes part time. This way, they have the money, just they need to make their study time more effective with a tutor. I have been tutoring for a long time, so I rely mostly on word of mouth.

+1 for the sites though, I have some friends who use them quite effectively.

If you could guarantee me a B or greater in Physics 2 next semester, I'd pay, I'll need to have you fly over at your own expense, though I'll give you a futon in the living room. 😛

I probably could actually lol. I'm a numbers man, and loved my physics series. I was actually bummed they did not have it on the DAT because I could have relied on that to boost my score

The futon almost makes it worth it. Hmmm.... 🙄

Set up profiles at a few of the tutoring sites to get started. I charge $20 an hour and get more business than I can handle. You won't at first, but after some time passes (if you're good) business starts to boom.
The summers are slower though....

I suggest starting with "University Tutor", just because its easy to set up the profile.
