i'm in dilemma here. a school i'm applying to will only accept an original LoR and not a copy. due to series of events, the problem is i have a packet of letters to send but also a new letter from a prof which i'm not able to add to the packet. thus the prof trusted me and just gave me the letter, so i could send copies of it as needed. it already took A LOT of polite bugging to get him to write the letter so i'd rather not get another original from him (not only because i don't want to ask, but also because i don't know how long it'll take him)

ideas?

Well, by "original" I'm sure they mean original signature. They will not know how many times that letter has been used elsewhere. I would suggest making a copy of the letter yourself (block out the old signature with a post-it note). Then take the letter to him and all he has to do is sign it. If it needs to be on university letterhead, just get it from him and tell him what you are doing, or see the department secretary, I'm sure she would be willing to help out. Good luck!

Out of curiosity what school is this? This could really put a damper in those of us that use a letter of recommendation service such as www.interfolio.com

I'm thinking your problem isn't that it's a copy, but because it's coming from you, rather than a letter service. you're not supposed to see your recommendations, which supposedly makes them more accurate. if the prof trusts you, I can't see why it would be that big a deal for him to print out another copy for you.

good luck. I'm still trying to nail down my last letter. my o chem prof was on sabbatical last semester and on vacation this summer, and I live in Maryland and he's in CA, so it's been impossible to get in touch with him!
