I would like to know what the process to specializing is. I know I am just a pre dent, however, I thought it does not hurt be be ready. So is it first year go to school and do research in the summer, the next summer do one/couple of externships, and take the board, third year?, fourth year apply? I figured since so many of you have already been through the process, I would ask. I am not even sure if I will want to specialize, and if I do decide to, what it will be in. Any information will be helpful. Thanks!

I believe a couple of schools take their boards part I after first year. So not all are after 2nd year.

Epic fail. (to be taken with a hint of humor)
To my knowledge, all schools require you to pass your Part 1 prior to your 3rd year. As for externship, you can do them btw 2nd and 3rd yr or btw 3rd and 4th yr. (which from my perspective makes you a better extern since you have more knowledge in whatever field you're externing in for having had somewhat of a hands-on experience in clinic)
As for research, it doesn't seem to be weighing as much as ppl seem to think, depending on the field.

Sorry, I meant to say boards 2nd year and wanted to know what went on 3rd year, but you answered that. So what is done during the summer of year 1? I have shadowed an OMFS and liked the work they did compared to some of the other specialist. However, I understand that it is VERY competitive, to say the least, to get into a good program. I just want to know what the best route would be during dental school. I will work hard and do my best, but wanted to know the best route based on experience. I am sure if I follow a general plan of what is considered good, it can be applicable to any residency program.
