I am waiting on one last thing for all of my apps to be complete, the professor letter of recommendation. Does anyone know if this must be written by a basic science professor or can it be from a professor who teaches different courses that aren't one of the basic sciences. I have someone who is willing to write one, but doesn't teach any of the basic sciences. Has anyone had a letter written by a non-science professor and gotten an interview/acceptance? If so, which schools are willing to accept this?

Usually the schools you are applying to state the guidelines regarding letters of recommendation.

Does your school not have a pre-professional committee? It is usually preferred or even required in some cases to submit a pre-professional committee letter of recommendation if your school has such an organization. Separate professor letters are usually for when the school doesn't have this committee.

It depends on the school. Im pretty sure all schools require at least one science letter most two. Some also require one non-science letter and will accept more but will still require the basic two science letters (some have to be from professors who have taught you). So check with the schools application requirements, they should list what they need there.

Good Luck in the application process!

The person I was contemplating using is a psych professor. He has his masters and PhD. Not only does he teach college courses, but he is a forensic evaluator. So, I didn't know if this would kosher.

If you're really worried about it, contact the school. Personally, I would have sent that letter.

i agree with this. send whatever you've got. i sent dean letters and undergrad advisor letters in place of a second science prof letter and a couple schools considered that complete (not just the pcoms). definitely worth sending in the meantime while you try to track down a no-doubts-about-it 'science' prof. good luck, Littleg, and i love that you're from surprise 🙂
