I recently asked one of my professors if he would be willing to write me a letter of recommendation, and he said that he would be happy to help me out. But because he is so busy, he wants me to write my own letter from his perspective, and then he will edit it appropriately. Has anyone ever had to do this? Is there any advice you all can give me on how to write this letter or what kind of format I should follow? Thanks.

yes. Most dentists wont write you one either you write it and go print it at their shop. Trust me a lot of people write their own recommendation letters as their prof, & dentists. So just write yourself a good and say how good of a student you are. and how when you set mind to something you dont like to give up... & how you ask questions and how you participate in class etc... give some examples make it look good.

good luck

I've never experienced this. All of my professors (and dentist) wrote it themselves.

You dont need anyone to tell you. You can even write a persons name that they dont even know and use infertelio. NO ONE CHECKS.

I had to write out some qualities about myself that they wanted me to express....some asked me to write out something that i wanted them to say about me

I asked ALOT of may professors for LORs... I ended up collecting 7... but I am pretty sure I asked from more than 10 professors.

I had a few professors agree for the LOR, but they wanted me to write it up and have them sign it... I didn't do this.... not because of the whole ethical/moral thing... but because it wouldn't have sounded genuine enough. I don't know how to recommend myself to others without making it sound like a personal statement.

If I was short on LORs, sure I guess I woulda had no choice but to write my own... since I had too many LORs on hand, I didn't care to refuse a few.

**EDIT** my dentist tho... He wanted me to write my own letter. I agree'd. I showed up 2-3 weeks later with like 10 LORs printed from the web and showed it to him... and I asked him if he can kindly just put together my LOR for me. He agree'd and a few weeks later, put it in an envelope and gave it to me. I never opened the envelope, I put it inside another envelope and shipped it to interfolio.

...

Your brand of ethics scares me.

Maybe your professor wanted to compare notes on how you perceive yourself vs how he/she sees you or simply wanted to test your letter writing skill or he/she never took English composition in college. Does he/she have someone to write research proposals for him/her or that be putting him/her out of his/her league?

You should write about how you saved your professors life... USING DENTISTRY.

I called addsas a couple days ago and asked about sending letters via interfolio and they said they dont accept letters from that service.

what ?!?!?! I just used interfolio this current cycle wer in.

😕 God i hope we can use interfolio.. i don't want to rely on my lazy professors when apps open!

lol...

on the side note if someone is so desperate to do this i am pretty sure they can find ways, such as get a new school email address, or use their friends, etc... there are so many ways. You only need one email address to send in a committee letter.

and whats up with these guys calling aadsas couple days ago or today(sat). lol

How endearing. You realize that it's not really that big a deal to have them just upload their letters straight to AADSAS and they would actually have more time if you just let them do that.

On there website, I found that they DO accept interfolio 🙂

"Q:Can I submit my letters of evaluation for my ADEA AADSAS application via Interfolio?

A: Although it does not matter what format your evaluators use to submit your letters to Interfolio, applicants must use the “paper option” when submitting letters from Interfolio to ADEA AADSAS. An electronic link between Interfolio and ADEA AADSAS does not exist.

In the ADEA AADSAS application, “Evaluators (LOE Matching Form)” section, the applicant must enter the evaluators information, select “paper” as the reference type (this option indicates how your letter will be submitted to ADEA AADSAS), and click “Save”. The applicant then prints the Letter of Evaluation Matching Form and submits it to Interfolio. Interfolio then prints the letter, attaches it to the ADEA AADSAS Letter of Evaluation Matching Form and forwards them to ADEA AADSAS.

Ha that is ridiculous. If I were you I would find another professor, but I don't know what kind of relationship you have with him/her and how much you want one from them.

One of my professors did this to me and here is what I did.

I researched the top ten qualities of a successful dentist. Them I chose three that I felt I truly have and I wrote about them giving examples from my performance in that professor's class that show how/why I posses that quality.

I have heard of people having to to this. As for me I tend to want to down-play my strengths so this would NOT have been a good option for me. One of my LOR writers sent me a copy of his LOR and it was amazing beyond anything I would have come up with myself!
However, I do recommend having back-ups!!! Two of the six people that agreed to write a letter never replied to my follow-up call or emails 🙁. People well-intended but busy. Have at least one back-up for each category (example: if you need one non-science, one doctor, or two science professors always have one more. The only exception is the pre-medical committee letter - you can only have one of those 😛).
If this professor is the only back-up you can get, don't discard it right away. It's not ideal, but he/she would change anything he/she doesn't agree with.
