Found this on the U Penn department of surgery website---thought it was interesting. They are really laying it out there.

Over the past 5 years, the successful applicant to the
University of Pennsylvania General Surgery Residency has :

Scored above the 90th percentile in the National Boards (70%)
(average score = 85th percentile)

Achieved "HONORS" in Core Surgery (98%)

Achieved "HONORS" in Core Medicine (95%)

Received "HONORS" in 50-75% of medical school courses

Received "Outstanding" letters of recommendation from their Department of Surgery Chairman

Been Awarded "AOA" membership (40%)

Accomplished significant prior research experience

Committed to academic surgery career with major research component (80%)

yeah we had someone match at penn for surg. she was a superstar, a total stud. president of AOA, all this other crap too. it's tough.
 
Most major academic GS residencies and well establish residencies will post or list similar crap. This does not mean it is not true. I just trying to tell you it is not a big deal nor is it unusal.
