I've been looking up some programs on FREIDA and had a question about the program sizes.
I understand that the gap between PGY1 and 2 (Ex, 10 people in PGY1 and 5 in PGY2) probably means categorical vs. prelim. But what about the difference in PGY2 size and PGY3?
For example, if there are 5 people in PGY2 and 3 in PGY3, does that mean the program only keeps 3 or does it just mean the recent increase in the size of the program? Just wondering because I see it a lot and I know of one residency program that takes four categoricals and keep only three.

Pyramidal program structures are against ACGME rules.

Depending on the program, some of the PGY2s may still be Prelims or Integrated residents who are counted under a different department for PGY3. It may also be that they've got people going into the lab accounting for the differences.

If you'll give a specific example we can figure it out for you.

Could also be that the program added residents over the years or residents dropped out or were terminated
