Anyone been or plan to be mostly in this area care to comment (compare/contrast) on the programs at Duke, UNC, Wake, UVa, and I'll throw in Vanderbilt also.

I know Duke boasts an excellent regional block program, and their facilities are modern with computerized charting in place for at least 5+ yrs. Excellent variety in case loads with transplants, etc., ample research, etc. Heard that lectures may on the "skimpy" side but everyone does well on boards as they pick self-motivated learners, etc...

The other program I'm familiar with is Vanderbilt, with new ORs and equip, fairly new computerized charting, new Children's Hospitac, etc, lots of perks including moving expenses, overall solid program in terms of case loads, etc with transplants, research. Working on getting new/vamped-up simulator up and running again...

I am currently doing my transitional year at Duke and will start my CA1 year here in 6 months. Your assessment of good regional, good tech is correct, and it is not heavy on lectures. Resident lecture and grand rounds on wed mornings, key word and mock orals on a regular basis with some evening lectures thrown in once in a while. From my one rotation in anesthesia as an intern I saw a lot of teaching in the OR as well. The anesthesia department here is great. The people are nice and we have most weekends off during CA1-CA3 years (night float and ob excluded). I am not from the south but took a chance on coming here since I had such a good interview experience. Not that I like being an intern but I have really enjoyed being here. Not an urban place with a lot of clubs but the weather is good most the year and there are a lot of outdoor things to do. Good luck with everything. 👍

Wake is a great program. Regional is terrific, teaching is good in and out of the OR, case numbers are good in all areas, and the schedule is usually great. All of the residents seem happy.
