I've heard of some generous programs paying for interviewees to stay at a hotel, but I haven't been so fortunate to receive any such offers. I guess that's to be expected with the current economy and increasing popularity of anesthesia. Which programs are paying for the hotel this year?

When you're applying for fellowships, most will fly you out as well.👍

Hopkins, UNC, UAB, Mayo, Vandy, UC-Denver are paying. I think UW and Stanford are too...can't remember.

MGH is giving a resident rate at a hotel. Duke too - $75.

The most impressive by far is UC-Denver. They are shuttling interviewees around with the limo service this year. The hotel looks snazzy too.

Both of the Kansas programs are paying for hotels. University of Kentucky also pays for a hotel and $200 for travel expenses. That's all I can remember off the top of my head. It seems like most programs have some sort of discount with the local hotels ($75-100/night).

I am pretty sure that every single program that has invited me has offered free hotel, which has really surprised me (except U Chicago I think?). Anyway, definitely helps with the crazy cost of flights nowadays.

Wow, are you serious? Lucky you.

WaveEquation, UW and Stanford didn't offer to pay for my hotel. Maybe they like you better. 🙂

Oklahoma, UTSW also. Both put you up at the Sheraton and both have nice dinners with plenty of beverages. Kentucky is probably the most generous in the country. Nice hotel, $200, spouses welcome, fancy steakhouse dinner, goody bag and interview portfolio awaiting you at the hotel.

It's great when it happens....Believe me I was there at one stage of my training.

You will also see tht a lot of 'good' programs knwo they are 'good' and wont do those sorts of things. Anesthesiology is competitive and they know it.

Having said that, it definitely leaves a good taste in one's mouth if you interview somwhere that's generous like that.

So far, every place that has offered me an interview (including prelims) has offered a fully-paid hotel stay EXCEPT CHICAGO SCHOOLS. Idk what it is about them, but they're cheap. Also, Loyola offers a 'discounted rate' at a hotel in another city nearby (outside of Maywood). ???

Side note: WashU takes you on a limo ride tour of St. Louis. 😀

When I applied for residency in 2002 all programs paid for hotels. Dartmouth offered to pay airfare from California. I'm surprised to hear they aren't paying for this routinely anymore. Sorry guys, it just gets more expensive doesn't it?
In the end its worth every penny.
Good luck

VCU pays for a hotel and transportation to the interview.

I believe CCF pays for your hotel if you reserve it under the residency rate on your credit card but the hotel directly charges the department upon checkout.

Prelims offering hotels?? Where did you apply?

St. Vincent's in Indianapolis puts you up in a nice hotel for the night.

Also, I find (from friends) that community programs and programs not in major cities will do this as well for recruitment purposes.

I see that if programs DON'T pay for at least a hotel for the night they are:
1. Cheap
2. Don't have the funds.

Neither of which are necessarily signs of a program worth investing in and working for, IMO.

Add Albany to the list of programs that pay for a hotel.

I agree with the above post. It's definitely a nice gesture and from my experience thus far, it seems like the well funded programs offer a hotel and a pre-interview dinner, while the financially struggling programs don't.

My program has decided to stop paying for the hotel the night before interviews this year. Previously there has been a discrepancy between what various programs at my institution have spent for interviews (for example, Anes spent more than IM per slot to fill). The hospital, in trying to manage their overall operating budget, has decided to equalize the program budgets for interviewing. So we are continuing to take candidates out for a nice dinner, but they will have to cover the hotel (at the hospital's discounted rate).
I don't know if I would read into this what some of the previous posters have suggested- that our program is struggling financially. For example, in my time here, the hospital has made numerous structural upgrades; there is strong financial support for resident participation at conferences; a multi-million dollar simulation center has been opened, etc. While a program paying for a hotel is a great help with a candidate's personal interview budget, be careful the conclusions you draw from it.
Good luck on the interview trail :luck:
