I am looking into Yale and BID. Aside from location, which program (Yale v. BID) would you say was a stronger program?more prestigious? better lifestyle? choice jobs after training? Any information would be helpful.
Thanks

Thank you for the replies. In your opinion what makes BID not even in the same class. Thanks again. Also where should I do research on programs program websites? program directors?

You misunderstood me. I do not consider Yale to be of the same quality of program as BID. BID is the stronger program, in my opinion.

As far as further information about programs in the northeast, I would be happy to share my experiences as they relate to your specific situation...ie what year in med school, what kind of school, MD, DO, IMG, what type of lifestyle you are looking for etc.

Let me know

I'm a 4th year student MD program in US. I'm looking into the northeast programs, mostly NY to Boston. I guess my preference would be a program with good lifestyle and prestigious name that would make me more marketable when I finish residency. Thanks again for the reply bthings.

I'll have my cake and eat it too damnit! Out here check out U of Chicago. Has a good mix like that. That is all.

Ok now we're getting some where.

If name of institution and national prestige is what you are into:

MGH
CORNELL
Columbia
Yale
NYU
JHU
UPENN

For quality of program and reputation inside anesthesia circles:

MGH
Cornell
Mt. Sinai
JHU
Upenn
BID
B&W
Dartmouth

For quality of program and sweet lifestyle (ie work hours, moonlighting)

Tufts
G-town
Uconn
TJU
Mt. Sinai
Pitt

*Disclaimer* these are just the programs I have experience with and is solely the opinion of the author. You had better get on your horse as far as researching any programs. You should already be on your audition rotations and that ERAS date is creeping up.

Best of luck,

-B

This has been discussed ad nauseum but what the hell, I'll add my 2 cents. Here's my scientifically proven, one man surveyed opinion of the Northeast programs. One man's trash is another's treasure, eh?:

Based on reputation
1. MGH
2. J. Hopkins
3. BWH
4. Cornell
5 Columbia
6. UPenn
(Somewhere btn 7 and 10) BID, Yale, Mt. Sinai

Quality of cases/program:
1. BWH
2. J. Hopkins
3. MGH
4. Columbia
5 Cornell
6. UPenn
(somewhere btn 7-20)BID, Yale, Mt. Sinai

where do you guys come up with this stuff? just curious. if a program gets you to the boards, you're going to do fine. there are tons of great programs out there. most of the ones in the big city are more geographically desirable, but not all the awesome programs are in boston and ny.

Read the stuff about Columbia and Cornell on this board. Cornell gets high ranks cause of its housing and then since the housing is so close, you get called in all the time. To top it off, a department in flux. Columbia - just do a quick search on this board to see what residents are going through, not good. The Harvard programs (MGH, BWH, BID) all have their pluses and minuses, especially the Harvard name, and there are some differences to how the residents are treated. With any of these, you probably can't lose. Mt Sinai and NYU not academic places with no name recommendation - the people posting are obviously from New York. Between Yale and BID, the answer is pretty obvious - BID. For starters - which eliminated it for me, Yale is in New Haven (not the safest place).

Obviously, I got it out of my _sshole. Hence, the sarcastic "scientifically proven, one man surveyed opinion.. one man's trash is another's treasure" sentence etc.... My point is that rankings of programs is essentially useless, subjective and often dependent upon personal biases i.e. "gut feeling".

The original poster hasn't even applied to, much less been contacted by either BID or Yale, so truly what's the benefit of comparing until he does? Is the poster so influenced by peer pressure that he foolishly would not apply to Yale if we unconscionably told him it is inferior to BID?

It is akin to one asking, "Yo, which will get me more b_tches, a Ferrari or Lamborghini?". One should reply, "MoFo, stop playing you don't got either one and until you drive up in one, you ain't got sh_t".

My politically correct answer is: He/She should apply to all programs of interest, accept invitations to interview when offered, and go from there.
