Hello everyone,

I am finally in a place where I am able to pursue a career in medicine. Also my wife (current psych resident) is fully supportive with the idea of me going to medical school.

I am making this post so I can take your valuable insight and implement them now and be ready in the next 3 years which is when I plan to apply to medical school.

Below I have goal/idea of what my med school application could look like in the next 3 years. I would really appreciate it if you could help me strengthen my application. I want to focus on quality instead of quantity regarding my ECs, especially considering I will be working full time as an engineer (my current job).

Potential "Application" in 3 years:

cGPA : 3.55 (Currently 3.49 Civil Engineering, assuming will be at 3.55 after pre-reqs)
MCAT: 510 - 515+ (Going to bust my butt)
Shadowing: ~100 hrs (Assuming reasonable and adequate)
C Volunteering: ~250 hrs (I have an interview setup to begin volunteering in palliative care setting...)
Volunteering: ~250 hrs (Really enjoy mentoring younger kids. Planning to be a "big brother")
Research: Probably wont have time for it as I will be working full time.
Full time Job: Engineer (my current job)
Other: Six years experience as an Army National Guard Officer (Medical Platoon Leader). (Completed service obligation and honorably discharged)
URM: Potentially? Not sure. Less common nationality that falls within "Asian" ethnicity.

Thank you!

Come back when you’ve got an actual app! It was easy in the beginning to say “I’m going to make all A’s in the 70 credits I’m taking” and “I’m going to KILL the MCAT and score 510-515+” (which by the way, is a HUGE range.. that’s going from 82nd percentile to 91st+ percentile). Hold your horses! Focus on the now. And doing well with what’s directly in front of you. Things change and stuff happens. Not to say you won’t grt a 4.0 and a 515+. Stay focused and kill it! It’s just a little hard to judge off of a dream.

Direct quote from AAMC on URM (pulled from Darmouth’s Website)
“Underrepresented in medicine means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." This lens currently includes students who identify as African Americans and/or Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American (American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians), Pacific Islander, and mainland Puerto Rican. The definition also refers to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Each school treats URMs differently. A couple do put some small Asian nations as URM. For some reason I am thinking Cambodian is one nation that can be URM. Obviously not sure where you are from, or what schools do things differently, just showing there are exceptions.
