How many automatic promotions will a military dentist receive and what at years are they done? Can dentists advance above the rank of Colonel assuming they get some type of administrative position?

Can't speak for the other services. In the Army you have 2 automatic promotions. The first is when you come in - you are a Captain. The second occurs 6 years later when you become a Major. You don't have to do anything to get those 2 promotions. All the other promotions are competative and require you to complete milestones/benchmarks. The normal promotion schedule is every 6 years. So if you do everything you need to and keep your nose clean (no DUI's etc...) - at 18 years in the Army you could be a Colonel.

For promotion to Lieutenant colonel you should have specialized and completed the Officer Advanced course/Captain Career course.

For Colonel you should have become board certified and completed Intermediate Level Education/Command and General Staff College.

There is 1 position reserved for a 2-star Dental General in the Army. In addition to that you can compete against all the rest of the medical officers for some 1-star General positions that come open from time to time.

Currently in the AF we have 100% promotion opportunity to major and Lt Col. We also have one position for a Maj General.
