I heard that the patent on Propecia (finasteride) was expiring this year.

How soon before they usually come out with generics? I figure you guys might be in the know about such things. 😀

Usually they are ready the day the patent goes away and they are cleared to distribute by the FDA.

Finasteride is already generic via the drug Proscar. This basically means you can get it in the 5mg strength for BPH, but not the 1mg strength for MPB. If you have a big prostate and are going bald, it's double the awesome.

I have bought generic propecia online, who knows if it is real or not. It comes in a blister pack and is manufactured in india. I got it off of www.rxpillsmd.com without a prescription. They gave me a "free online consultation" to replace an actual prescription. Is it real? I dont know, what do you guys think?

I would NEVER EVER EVER purchase a medication online and by the fact that you say it's made in India I would not trust that it's real at all. First of all, most drugs don't come in blister packs (although a few do) and second, if it were real it wouldn't say made in India. Who knows what is in that pill, it could be a knock-off but it also could be something totally different. I had a professor who put in a mock order for Viagra and also put that he was taking nitroglycerin and he still was "counseled" and approved with no mention of the contraindication with Viagra and nitro use. I would never trust a site like that and really worry for people who order drugs on websites like this.

Just to set the record straight, many drugs come in blister packs. I used to work at a hospital that would order most of its drugs "pre-packaged" in blister packs. The hospital wanted every pill labeled so that the medication could be easily identified.
Many drugs are made in India, but I wouldn't trust an online consulation. Go see a doctor, then get the RX (which could be made in India) from your local, licensed pharmacy.

Propecia doesn't come blister packed, though. Unit dosing it makes no sense.

However, sometimes these Indian joints actually do sell the correct thing. There are people who bought the Viagra and they claimed it worked. Placebo effect, legit stuff? Who knows..I wouldn't trust it...

Yup...Dr Reddy's **** comes from India. High quality cipro and such. However, those labs are FDA approved....the labs making Vaxibald brand of finasteride are probably not and may be sketchy. I wouldn't quite call him dense as much as I'd call him not completely correct, but trending towards what is likely the correct opinion.

The stuff I have comes in a blister pack of ten units per pack. I have ordered it three times and the first two times it came directly from india. The third time I ordered the stuff it came from the island of sechylles which is an island off the coast of Africa. The first time in blister packs, the second time all the pills came in one vacuum sealed bag, the third time they came in the blister packs. It says "finpecia" on the blister packs and gives a name of a company. I googled the name and found a website for a pharmaceutical company in India. The company looked legit and had a list about a mile long of all the drugs they manufacture. If anyone is interested I could take a pic of the blister pack or give you any info about it.

I have gone to a doctor and I have been prescribed for propecia but the problem is that it so expensive. I pay about $150 for a 9 month supply from the online website. A 9 month supply would otherwise cost me $450-500.

My baby daddy has a cousin that comes from India.

Just a personal opinion - I'd never order ANY drug online unless with was through a US licensed online pharmacy (you can find these listed). The ONLY place I ever recommend anyone ever go for discounted drugs is Canada & ONLY if they have a real brick & mortar address. Even this is illegal.

Now - a professional opinion - online drugs, unless they've gone thru official channels are dangerous. Why? Because they are more often than not adulterated - either from the raw material end or anywhere thru the manufacturing process to the labeling & marketing process.

That is why we will have, within a few months, a nationwide pedigree law in which a pharmacist will be able to document exactly each place the drug has been - from raw material to the wholesaler. Some states - Nebraska, I think, already have it in place. Why? Because we've had disastrous experiences with adulterated drugs which "appear" to be legitimate. The most recent is Procrit & Epogen. The labels, seals & documentation all seemed ok - but it actually had no active drug & had components which affected renal function. Adulterated products account for at least 1/4 of all drug recalls.

For you - eh...a few hundred dollars spent on a lifestyle product which may or may not work. But, for the kidney failure patient - it could be a life sentence.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what the manufacturing says on the label - it probably wasn't made there anyway - particularly on an island off the coast of Africa which is well known for placing money you don't want traced.

Its true, many of our US licensed generic products are manufactured in other countries. But, these plants have undergone US inspections & some don't pass (ever wonder why some generics just can't be obtained for a bit - thats why. Thats also why there was a sudden loss of flu vaccine a year or so ago - one plant didn't pass inspection). But, unless these are licensed US manufacturers or distributors, you're taking a risk - packaging is irrelevant - particularly whether its unit dosed or not, sealed or not.

So...for the extra money you will save on this lifestyle drug - are you willing to risk taking a product which might have ephedra, a steroid or two, some minoxidil or a by product of it???

Buyer beware.......

Ok let me clarify my initial post. 1) By blister packaging I meant as far as retail goes, not many drugs come this way or rather are dispensed this way, with the exception of a few. I'm well aware that in a hospital they are ordered as unit dose or often unit dose the meds themselves, this is different packaging than retail. I'm also well aware that they are available this way but why would some random online pharmacy be buying it this way rather than in large bottles. Doesn't make sense from a financial perspective, it would seem like it would cost more. 2) by the "Made in India" remark, what I meant was that I've never seen a drug package say Made in .... usually it has the name of the manufacturer and that's how you can tell if it's legit based on if it's an FDA approved manufacturer. I could care less where it was made as long as it's an FDA approved manufacturing plant. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough but I've never seen a blister pack of meds that says where it's made...just the manufacturer.

Regardless my main point is that you can't trust where your meds are coming from if it's some random website. There are some good websites where you can purchase drugs, but they require prescriptions and not just a counseling session with an "online doctor."

This is true. There are generic Enoxaparin on shelves of a few pharma manufacturers. They just can't release it.

I had some lady tell me that her husband had to have brand name Proscar 5 mg. She said, "You can tell the difference if you put them in water, the brand is better."

He'd make one hell of a living at the Ripley's Believe it or Not in Atlantic City though!!!

Well I still have my hair, no side effects for the past 4 years, I'll let you know if it changes.

All of the men on my pop's side of the family have a full head of still dark colored hair. The youngest among them is 57...the oldest 73. Let's hope I got those genes.

You lucky bastard, I am the complete opposite, there isnt a blood relative of mine that has any kind of hair whatsoever. I am doomed, I am just trying to slow it down for now.

Actually, the patents aren't going to expire until 2012 and 2013. While they are not their strongest patents, they have reached a settlement with the first-generic that the generic company (Dr. Reddy's) won't market their product until January 1, 2013.

"This can't be my prescription. I've never seen a Dr. Reddy" 😛

It has worked great for me. I have had my doubts about it too, but because brand is so expensive I was willing to take a little risk and I think it worked out. I had hair grow in since i started. No side effects. All though I can't wait until the generic comes out in the US.

I think Generic version of propecia is more cheap (In terms of price) than the branded propecia... And It is very effective treatments to overcome hair loss problem.

Thanks!
