Hi SDN members (preoptometry and current OD student)

I think it is important to know pros and cons of all modes of practice. Not only it can help us write essay for UHCO, we should all know about this, right? Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

· Solo private practitioner
· Partnership/Group based practitioner
· Commercial based practitioner
· Armed Forces based practitioner
· HMO based practitioner
· Veteran Affairs based practitioner
· Academic based practitioner
· Industry based practitioner

ive been the first three.

1) solo private practitioner = high level of responsibility. ie, all revenue, decisions, difficult cases come down to you. great if you are willing to go all out and reap ALL benefits. cons - difficult cases and difficult personality patients can not be jockeyed to another partner in your office 😀 .

2) partnership = rewarding to work as a team, especially if surgeons are partners. guaranteed constant learning to exceed what you'd learn by experience in solo, again especially if you are working with surgeons. make sure partners are compatible.

3) commercial = if you have any moral at all, or any bit of nurturing or respect for your profession, you likely suffer in this mode of practice. Otherwise, if you like prostituting your services away, this is the ideal situation.

really, find out if optometry is right for you, and see for yourself what mode of practice you like. it will help you so much at interviews.

PS UHCO, is so awesome! good luck on your application and interview!:luck:

I believe you should shadow and explore all modes of practice in school. Not every Dr is successful in any mode of practice. There are good and bad Dr's in all modes of practice you'll find.

I don't think all commercial doctors are bad, and all private docs are 100% happy or better all the time. I will be converting from commercial to my own private practice before too awfully long.

Is one doctor better than another? A commercial doctor that does 10 exams a day and feels comfortable treating anything (i.e. glaucoma, corneal pathology) assuming he has all the appropriate equipment.

Or a private practice doctor that sees i dunno again 10 exams in a day that will only Rx glasses and contacts. He'll refer anything as far as disease goes. Now is this just a doctor in a box too that just spins and grins?

Is the private practice Dr. better for image of OPtometry because he has own building, or dispensary? But unable or comfortable to treat diseases. As I've seen through an externship at two private practice.

I agree this is not the norm, and most private practice do more to promote the image of optometry than corporate does. Just be the best doctor you can and promote the best health care you can in any modality you choose. You control how the image of yourself and the care you give goes.
