Hey guys, im taking the MCATS in August this Saturday. On the Practice MCATS ive gotten a 25 as the highest score. My gpa is 3.18. what do you think my odds are of getting into the Top 4 Caribbean... Do you know anyone with similar stats or worse that go in, I know its not going to be easy but I am determined to try my best and be a succesful physician.

In short, yes, but do as well as you can on the MCAT.

You are taking the wrong exam. You should be taking the MCAT, not the MCATS. You are being scammed.

You need to MCAT for medical school, silly.

Hahaha.

Trust me, i've seen worst gpa's than yours in students from my class and these people didn't get 30's on MCAT either. Just do the best you can and I would think that a 26 would get you into SGU. But that is my opinion. I had a 3.5 gpa and 3 mcats (22,23,24, yes i know they suck) and i got in. I know people that had sub 3.0 gpa and sub-30 mcat that become some of the smartest students in my class. just do the best u can.

Good post. Very true.

If you aren't competitive enough to attend a U.S. medical school, then I would suggest that you...

1) Find a "Special Masters Program" (1-2 years) or seek a "Post-Bacc Pre-Medical Program" or earn a "M.S. in a strong science field and re-apply."

These alternatives can be done within the U.S.

HOWEVER, If you do one of the three options, and you are still not competitive...stop wasting your time and money and find another career to go into - because obviously this isn't one suited for your ability.

There are people that done all the above and went to a caribbean school and now are practising doctors. If you want to do it there are ways and means.

I want to thank everyone in here for replying. It really helped alot.

Dmitrinyr, your GPA is really really high! What year are you in med school? or have you just started?

Don't listen to this guy. Dont waste your time with a masters program. We had a ton of guys that spent the equivalent to what it cost to pay for the 1st 2 years of medical school on these programs (Georgetown, Barry, etc...) and then they end up not getting in to a U.S. school with 2 years of med school debt.

Bottom line. St. george(actually the U.S. govt.) lets you take out stafford loans (200k max for any graduate education) after that its all private loans ( you better have excellent credit or a cosigner-they wont take you if you dont!)
So if you go to one of these master programs and spend 100k then you are only allowed 100k for the rest of your graduate education.

Best thing to do is go to undergrad and if your not competitive for U.S. dont waste your time just go to the island. It will blow your mind to see how many student are on the island that there parents are Docs in the U.S.. There parents give them the same advice. They know the deal. It doesnt matter where you get your M.D. it just matters that the program your in allows you to do your 3rd and 4th year in the U.S. so that you can get into a program to train in for a U.S. residency! Thats the bottom line. So dont waste your time with a masters!

This is so true! I used to have negative feeling towards caribbean schools and mainly its because I didn't know much about it. My university where graduated from told me that I wouldn't find a job after attending a caribbean school. In fact, the dean of admission at Ross University (Dominica) came to our school to talk about ross. Before he arrived, the professors at my university was talking negative about the school. I understand that ALOT of people are ignorant about medical school. After medical school (wherever you graduated from), you will be called an M.D. regardless. In addition, you will make the same amout of money as everyone else. As educated individuals we need to do our own research instead of relying on others opinion.

I think anyone above a 2.8 that wants to go "Caribbean" has a decent shot at passing and being an MD these people who post "Go do something else" think they need to "Save the world" from People who do not "fit" the MD profile! Forget these snobs, some end up taking Step one over and over, I know some in US Medschools who had 3.8 undergrad and ended up taking the Step one 2 and 3 times to pass! LOL Really and even some of these "Special people" who drop out of Medschool. Getting admitted to Medical school is way different than passing and Graduating. :meanie:

Caribbean only matters to Premeds and the few stuck up US MD students the rest could care less MD=MD
