I'm a graduate from San Jose State University - RN BSN...
Honestly, if you are about to get married, perhaps have kids in the "future".. it might be time for you to drop nursing and go straight into medicine if that is what you want in the end. If you finish your nursing pre-requs (and get at least a 3.4+ gpa so that you get in on your first attempt) and score well on the TEAS tests, the earliest you can graduate SJSU in nursing after applying will be in 4-5 years (1 year to finish your pre-reques, then if you get in on your first cycle one semester to apply). After you're done you should practice for at least a year. I don't think any medical school will look at your seriously especially if your a non-trad if you just switch from nursing to medicine without using any of your nursing training (remember there is a nursing shortage, medical schools know this too). So add on an extra year or so to pass boards and get used to your first job (you won't beable to do new grad training and med school pre-requs at the same time), plus getting ready to applying for medical schools (maybe 1-2 years). the earliest you will matriculate if you do this path will be about 10 years.... i agree with earlier posts.. if your bottom line is that you want to do medicine, then go straight for medical school, doing nursing will be a waste of your time and will not look favorable on your applications unless you practice for a year or more.
Now if you don't mind entering as an older medical student, and want the time to figure out if you really want to pursue medicine then i think your plan is a good one. It wasn't until i worked in an ED for a full year that i knew i was ready to commit to pursueing medicine. Even though i graduated with honors, in sjsu's first accelerated BSN program with a bunch of scholarships, academic awards and EC activities.. i don't entertain the idea of matriculating at stanford... =P
