http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?...ction Following Treatment for Prostate Cancer
Pretty neat - a little algorithm for predicting sexual functional outcome in JAMA a few weeks ago. A urologist told me about it ... Funny, since it basically confirms what we tell patients about surgery and erections...
"A Sample Patient
In his editorial, Dr. Barry also provides a patient example: a 60-year-old African-American man with:
Prostate-specific antigen level of 6 ng/mL;
Body mass index of 30 kg/m2;
Baseline sexual HRQOL score of 83, indicating some sexual dysfunction; and
Tumor Gleason score sum of 6 (3 + 3).
The models would inform this man that he had a:
1 in 3 chance of maintaining erectile function after radical prostatectomy if a nerve-sparing operation could be performed but a 1 in 7 chance without it.
6 in 10 chance of maintaining erectile function after external radiation therapy and an 8 in 10 chance after brachytherapy (given that neoadjuvant hormone therapy is unlikely).
"To achieve these outcomes, however, there is a chance that this patient might require some assistance, most likely from a 5-phosphodiesterase inhibitor," adds Dr. Barry.
The models "may indeed provide some useful information for men still weighing their [treatment] options," he summarized."
