Many private practice prosthodontic patients tend to fit into a certain group. This patient population is usually fairly conservative, wealthy, and are older Caucasian people. This group will tend to favor spending $30k+ in an office they feel comfortable with with a doctor they feel comfortable with and feels they can communicate with well.

This patient population will not mind if you are Indian, Arabic, Asian, or Latino... many actually will view this type of doctor very fondly... but they have to be exquisite at communicating at a very sophisticated level. Trust me, prosthodontic patients will test you.

Now there are some exceptions to this. If you are Asian and practice in a very dense Asian community in a place like California or Latino and practice in a place like Miami, being more comfortable in your native language will be a huge success. I know many people in Miami who don't speak any English in their dental offices... ever.

If you can learn how to communicate exceptionally well in residency, hone your skills, and move to an area that is tolerant of multi-national clinicians, I can assure you that you will do very well in a prosthodontic practice.

Hey thanks a lot! I think my communication skills are fairly good, but my concern is license after residency. I mean FTDs have very limited license options after residency, right? And residency itself is so expensive, are the job opportunities good enough to comfortably repay huge loan amounts?

Huge loans? Do you have loans from your home country?

Really anything below 250k is serviceable, albeit you want to keep the debt as low as possible. The average US dental school graduate debt is $231k (ADA 2008 survey) so if you have no/little debt from your home country, then anything at or below $231k is average/below average as compared to new grad general dentists.

So the rule of thumb is that if you do not have sponsorship from your home country, keep your debt at a reasonable level and you'll do fine. Try to go to a program that has tuition that puts things in reasonable debt limits.

i.e.
BU link = 212k tuition + 152k living + 4k expenses = $368K total
Eastman link = 123k tuition + 54k living + 6k expenses = $183K total

Both are good programs with good reputations, but is the extra $185K of a school similar to BU worth it? Not to pick on BU but it is very expensive, as are other programs like USC, Harvard, etc.

GONGRATULATION for your admission.Both programs are good enough.But UMDNJ i think is better because it has smaller cost of living and tuition.Bu is good too,but it is a very very very expensive school with a very very high tuition and cost of living,So,i strongly believe that UMDNJ is a better opportunity and chance for you.
You will become a prosthodontist without spending a fortune and a lot of money.
When did you receive the acceptances from BU and UMDNJ?

Hello....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

I have a question for you, did you have to pay for a background check for BU??? I applied there too and now they want me to pay $150 for one. I just wanted to know if everyone that got an interview are being asked to do a background check. Did you decide where you are going to go yet?

What would you consider competitive stats for a Prosthodontic Residency?

-Boards?
-GPA?
-RANK?

Unlike OS and Ortho, there doesn't seem to be a "you must have at least an X on Pt 1/Pt 2 and have a Y GPA" mentality.

Also, what were some of the other variables that programs seemed to place emphasis on?

-LORs
-Previous Work Experience
-Prior Military (maybe for VA programs?)
-Research
-Age/Years out of Dental School
-Manual Dexterity (Hands-on exercises, case portfolios, etc)

Are some variables looked more favorably upon than other?
 
Good question!!! I would say they should have known you before, or you should have a recommendation from sb who they know!!! Neither of other qualities work!

Based on what I've heard, I believe that things like good letters, work experience, and excellent hand skills all play a more important part in pros applications than grades and board scores.

tuition is about 60k out of state per year. you get between a 15k-20k "work study" which dr. driscol defines as treating patients throughout the year. So roughly about 40k a year out of staters.
 
How does a current dentist (recent grad) establish and demonstrate interest in prosthodontics?

As a dental student, programs would encourage you to observe and welcome you with open arms. As a dentist, I'm not sure if this remains true. One program listed an observation program, but it costs $500/day or $2000/month. I don't know if this is standard, but I don't really feel like spending that kind of money to observe. I also would not be willing to take off time from working.

So what are other ideas?

-Graduate Prosthodontic Programs
-Local Prosthodontists
-Study Clubs

Best thing to do is hang out with a local prosthodontist on your day off (if you have a weekday off) and help him/her work up cases, treatment plan, wax, or just hang out. If you can't find time to do this, try study clubs.. but that's of limited value. If you're not serious enough to take a couple of days off to hang out, you're not serious about returning
to school. How about attending a prosthodontic meeting?

You don't need to accrue "shadow" hours like pre-dent, simply showing interest in prosthodontics by observing, working up a few cases or simply hanging out with some pros people and having a few beers talking about cases is enough to demonstrate interest.

A year or two of general practice is a great thing for prosthodontic residency... program directors look very favorably upon this (in the States is a very good thing, international private practice is not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing).
 
Thanks for the advice. Since I'm in an AEGD with the military, taking days off is not an easy thing to do. It's not so much that I'm unwilling to take the day off, it's more that those in charge are not willing to give me the day off haha.

However, I have been doing all those things you recommended with the Prosthodontist in our clinic, so I'll just keep that up and cater my CEs towards prosthodontics as well.

Hey.
I'm in the exact same boat.. I was told by someone who interviewed last year that they let you know within a month. But its been more than a month since my interview now. I guess we'll know sometime next week, before they get closed for the holidays. Because some people have already started getting acceptances from mid-November.

Did you get an email from PASS saying that you were conditionally accpeted and you had to give permission for a background check and pay a fee for it?? I got an email like that and I'm trying to figure out where it is from...(I applied to several schools and I dont know if anyone that applied to BU got the same one????!!!!). When was your interview??? Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I wonder if you have got any info about San Antonio. There's website isn't informative. Can anyone tell me more about this school, such as: tuition, stipend (teaching assistant), # of acceptance, what kind of patients they have there.

This is one of the premier prostho programs in the world. Apply, if you get an interview, go... I can assure you that you will be impressed. Some things have changed so I can't comment in more detail but their reputation in the prosthodontic community is stellar...

Thank you so much. I saw on this website that mostly people apply to VA houston but not UT houston, san antonio, or baylor. Is this mainly due to the financial issue?

You sound like you graduated or know someone who graduated from San Antonio. Can you tell me the pros and cons about this program?

To my knowledge, they do not have a preference for texas residency.

You hear more about other programs on this forum because a good portion of people who post on here are international applications looking for prostho programs that take internationals, such as BU, USC etc. So much of the conversation is directed as such.

VA programs are popular now because of the generous stipends offered. What you will find, however, is that a good low-stipend residency is far far better in the long run that an average high-stipend VA program. What we do know from the literature, however, is that the return on your investment for prosthodontic education is statistically higher for people who go to low cost stipend based programs (either university or VA) versus those who go to programs with substantial out of pocket expense.

Hey guys. I'm also waiting to hear from them! I emailed Dr. Morgano's secretary and she said interviews are done. Dr. Morgano will be sending the emails himself to people who are accepted. Good luck to all of us!

Thank you so much for your advice. Do you know what type of patients they have there at san antonio? Do they get to do alot of full mouth rehab? not just denture, I'd like to know if they have patients who want to do full mouth cosmetic, or full arch implants. I'm sure all program in texas are great.

They're closed for the holidays now and she said she doesn't know when he will send the emails. It depends on him entirely. And I read on this thread that someone got accepted in BU. So I don't know what to do now..I'm not sure if I should give up or still wait to hear from them. I hope they're haven't sent out all acceptances already, the secretary doesn't know as Dr. Morgano sends the emails himself. Let's hang in there for a bit longer and see. I thought atleast we'll know before they get closed for the holidays but they're just making it tougher for us..

Hello, I'm from Brazil and my interview was the first week of Dec. When I went there Dr. Morgano said that they had a total of 8 seats, they had already offered some positions, now according to him he still had 3 or 4 seats. He told me he would make his decision soon......I tought that meant before the holidays....I guess not! lol

are there any foreign trained dentists here applying for the prosthodontics program??which universities are you applying for?
does anybody know which universities accept foreign trained dentists for graduate programs...plz reply...it would be great help.

I dont know if they are back yet. I think they will be back on monday. To be honest, I'm not expecting to hear anything until next week. Whoever hears from them please post here. Good Luck!!!
