Proving URM
Started by Botaromania
Wtf?!?
Are they going to prove I'm not Mexican?
How can they prove you or are not URM?
I'm actually debating putting URM status (either AA or Hispanic) and seeing how many interviews I get.
No, this isn't a troll post but I've been a lurker for years and had this question.
It might help you get interviews, but it will definitely make them go poorly.
You are going to lie on your app and hope to be accepted somewhere?
I'll treat it as a social experiment and see if this URM stuff really matters.
As far any potential interviews are concerned, I'm pretty sure it doesn't say "THIS APPLICANT IS BLACK" anywhere on my application.
And besides, a good chunk of schools have closed-file interviews.

While i would recommend against doing that, I did the same thing in high school and applied for both the black and hispanic versions of the national merit scholarships....I can tell you that they actually contact your school to verify ethnicity, and when they find out you are white you lose the award. I was a little more into fighting the system as a young man than I am now

How does my undergraduate school know what ethnic background I identify with?
How does my undergraduate school know what ethnic background I identify with?
You checked lots of boxes before you got there.

You're telling me every URM matriculated student had their race/ethnicity double-checked via their undergrad school?

Do you really want to take that risk? If you were serious about getting into schools, this is not something you would do. I doubt you or anyone on here has a full understanding of what adcoms can find out. If they see that you put something like hispanic or AA on your app, and you are clearly not, you think they're going to just go along with it because they have no proof? Chances are that at least one school will find out, and blatantly lying about your race is something that would probably get that one school to have a chat with every other school you've applied to.
Not only that, but you're also showing a lack of integrity by lying. Regardless of whether or not race should be factored into the mix, you are still lying, and chances are it would catch up to you.

Well if it makes it any different, I applied via AADSAS 3 years ago and put "White".
Besides, they have no proof I'm lying.

Clearly you don't care about integrity, but to address the lack of proof, do you think the adcoms really care? If your name is "John Anderson" and your skin tone does not resemble AA or hispanic, I doubt the first person to notice will care about not having proof. They have no obligation to inform you why you were rejected from their school, or that they gave every other school a heads-up about your lie.
How far do you take this experiment? Checking that box doesn't stop there. You're just going to be AA or whatever for 5 years with a 'you can't prove it' attitude? Sounds like you're pretty serious about your education and career.
Just as serious as the adcoms who give preference to lower standards and to those who clearly aren't economically disadvantage but still claim URM (even if they truly are) in an effort to get in.
Do it and tell us how it goes.

This is where a like button would come extremely handy!

Yeah because Jason Kidd is a totally black name right?

Wait, Jason Kidd is black?

if a person is a URM, why would he not claim it? some people dont like to lie on their apps

Because not all Hispanics and Blacks are living in Compton....I know tons of middle class and upper middle class students from those ethnic backgrounds.
Wait, Jason Kidd is black?
Exactly. And that's what they'll say about me too.
Just wear black face to the interview and you're set....
Yeah because Jason Kidd is a totally black name right?
I mentioned name because if you don't look at all hispanic, a last name such as "rivera," for example, would at least possibly throw off some suspicion.
As someone else said, do it and let us know how it goes. 👍

who said it had anything to do with where they live? I didn't say if they were disadvantaged or not. If you are black or hispanic, you are underrepresented minority. Has nothing to do with disadvantaged. So if they are black or hispanic, they have to mark it down as so.
Either way, I think you should do it and come back to tell us how it goes. I'm kinda excited to find out about this.

You said they checked your scholarships.
It's pretty sad that you are trying to fake URM status and cheat your way into dental school. How desperate are you? Why not try and make yourself a better applicant by raising your GPA or DAT? Crying URM to increase your chances is simply pathetic.
You may not get caught in this lie or ADCOMs may not be able to prove you are not a URM now. But someday, when you are a dentist and you decide to sell your integrity for personal gain or to get ahead again... you will get caught. Except this time it will be the IRS or Delta Dental suing you for fraud and the state revoking your license.
If you are willing to lie and cheat on something so stupid and trivial as checking URM status... i can't wait to see what lies you will tell when thousands of dollars are on the line.

You're assuming I'm a fraud or will be a future fraudulent dentist. Not the case. I will uphold the profession to the highest degree.

By cheating your way into dental school, you will have already degraded the profession...
You have given me no reason to think otherwise. If you are willing to cheat to get into dental school, what will stop you from cheating on your dental exams, or cheating the insurance companies you bill? Where is the line drawn? When is it ok to cheat and not ok to cheat and lie?
If you are so confident that you will get away with it now, it leads me to believe you have gotten away with cutting corners before. If you think that all of a sudden you are going to wake up one day and magically be able to stop cheating and telling lies, you are only fooling yourself...

Botaromania just be honest in your app. You can't go wrong with being honest. I'm sure you'll still get a descent amount of interviews assuming you have good grades and DAT scores. Even if you do get more interviews, they'll find out eventually and all your hard work would've been for nothing.

They'll never find out unless they do a Y-Chromosomal analysis of me and figure me out.

You said they checked your scholarships.
No they didnt, i said that mine were checked in high school.
I was awarded the national hispanic scholar recognition award and the national achievement scholars award (my memory may be fuzzy on the names, but it was the hispanic and black version of the national merit awards)
I thought it was ridiculous that they were eligible for more than one and my skin color kept me ineligible, so I said I wanted to be considered on the forms. I got the award, they sent me a letter saying they would call the school to verify my ethnicity, they did, they took the award away and then confirmed to me onthe phone that I lost the award for being white.
I don't know if a med school will check but there is a lot of difference between a 16yr old bucking the system and risking your medical career, don't risk it
Elaborate lies like this catch up with people more likely than not.
Also +1000 to everything UltimateHombre said. I completely agree.
If you are not lying then why are you so concerned about "proving" URM?
You essentially are admitting to lying right here.

I was born in Africa but white as pearl!! should I still say I am black? both parents black....
Your interviewers will remember you as the white kid who listed himself as black on his AADSAS. What an impression you will make!! I can hear the post-interview banter now.
Good luck not getting black-listed. Or should I say white-listed? Go for it buddy. And like others have mentioned. Please keep us posted. I'd love to hear what your interviewers have to say about your heritage.

Yeah I'll be the mixed race kid who "lied" about his race....talk about a backlash and a potential lawsuit if they accuse me of not being black or Hispanic.

ok. I'm confused. Are you Caucasian or are you mixed? If you are mixed, I don't think it would be a problem if you claimed the URM side. Many of my mixed friends do that and they don't get in trouble. If you are Caucasian on the other hand, and claiming URM, that is very shady.
Are you actually mixed? If so, you can check each ethnic group you identify with. Then again, if you're one of those people who believes in that whole one drop rule I suppose no one can blame you for picking the ethnic group you most identify with. As someone earlier mentioned, adcoms can reject you for whatever reason and if they believe you to be suspect in any way post interview they'll simply reject you.
You'll see me on Fox News:
"White kid rejected from Howard and Meharry for not being to prove he's black"
"White kid rejected from Howard and Meharry for not being to prove he's black"
Keep feeding the troll, guys.
Don't worry, in his first post he said "No, this isn't a troll post" means he's serious because obviously, this guy has proven to us to be the most honest of guys out there.
Back on topic... go ahead OP, I think you should do it. To be honest, you have nothing to lose. You applied 3 years ago and obviously didn't get accepted. In these three years, you've done nothing to improve your app (like retake the DAT or do a Master's program to actually improve your chances), except try to come up with clever schemes like lying to the ADCOMs to get accepted. The way I see it, this might be your best chance at getting into DS. Go get 'em, tiger.

I hope he does go through with this. Gives me a better chance of getting accepted because I am an honest person. Smh.....
