Hey, I'm starting med school in the fall and am currently interested in prs. I know that to be competitive in the match, it's important to do some signifcant research in the field. I've also seen other people post about rotations that they've done in ps. I have a few questions about the fact that my med school doesn't have a ps program/department.
What should I do about research? Should I just try to do research in another field, such as GS or derm, that may be related to PS? Or would I have to/be able to do research at another med school during the summer? Are there any particular areas of PS research that make students more competitive applicants as opposed to other areas?
As far as rotations go, I'm aware that you can do elective rotations besides the usual required ones (med, peds, psych, surg, em, ob/gyn). But can the people who do PS rotations only do them if their med school has a PS program? Am I just out of luck, or can I do away rotations in PS? Are away rotations easy to do if you want them or are they competitive to get also?
Also, I can see how it'd look good to PDs if I've done a whole bunch of reserach and rotations in PS if I was applying to integrated programs. But if it turns out that I'm not competitive enough for integrated programs and I decide to apply to GS residencies (with the intention of doing a PS fellowship later), will I have a harder time matching in GS since all my research was in PS and they know right away that PS is my ultimate goal? I dont know if GS PDs would rather take people who they know want to be GS's.
Any advice would be appreciated, I'd just like to have some sort of plan when I start med school. Thanks.
