It is offensive to Native Americans. As currently celebrated in this country, "Thanksgiving" is a bitter reminder of 500 years of betrayal returned for friendship. Please stop generally wishing "Happy Thanksgiving" to people- assuming that they view the day as you do.

Oh, FFS, everybody shut up.

What, is SDN on its period or something?

The original Thanksgiving was celebrated by pilgrims and Native Americans alike, who all wanted to get together and give thanks because, despite their differences, none of them were Oklahoma Sooners. Something to be truly thankful for. We still celebrate this tradition today.

That's so sad...would someone pass the gravy?

With the exception of OU Surgery (a friend did his residency there), IAWTC.

Also, PT2MD, I love your av.

OP you are being asinine. Mods either close this thread or move it to someplace desolate. (not the lounge though. We hate that over there. 😉)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Get the hell out of our country if you hate its past, communist.

It's THANKS...GIVING day...

not Let's-stir-trouble-on-SDN-because-SDN-is-the-perfect-place-for-any-lame-cries-of-inequality-to-be-heeded-by-equally-nonsensical-remarks day...

I guess URM status doesn't make up for consequences of manifest destiny :scared:

But when people say "Happy Thanksgiving" they rarely invoke the memory of some ancient feast with any genuine meaning attached. Instead, they mean to communicate that they'd like for you to have an enjoyable break/holiday/time-with-your-family.

Only if you pass the stuffing. 😉

By that logic, it's rude to wish anyone "Happy/Merry *insert religious or racial holiday here*", because you can be sure some other religion or race has been persecuted by those people at some point. 🙄

Also, I should point out that the modern-day celebration of Thanksgiving has extremely loose ties to the original Pilgrims/Native American feast. More than anything, we owe it a female writer/magazine editor named Sarah Hale, who launched a decades-long campaign in the mid-1800s to have Thanksgiving recognized as a national holiday. It wasn't because she felt the need to honor the original Thanksgiving, but because "There is a deep moral influence in these periodical seasons of rejoicing, in which whole communities participate. They bring out . . . the best sympathies in our natures." Lincoln finally OKed it in 1863, probably because he felt it would be therapeutic during a time of civil war.

I hope you and your family have a happy day, just the same.

I better stop saying, "Happy Turkey Day!" as well.... it's rude to turkeys. This is absurd. The op and the the "you're v your" thread starter should go share a nice meal together (clearly not turkey, ham, mashed potatos, etc). They'd probably get along well.

Pathetic if you are unable to receive the greeting "Happy Thanksgiving"!

This OP is calling rude on others? That's rich. This is the poster who criticized a 25yo woman in the nontrad forum for not using birth control. Said 25yo woman had a kid at 16.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jamilla.

whatever makes you content..as for me, i'm just gonna give thanks on this day.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jamilla.

Said woman (who had 2 children) wanted special treatment and recognition for being unable to figure out how to use birth control. She was essentially using her gender as an excuse for her failings. As a feminist I found this offensive.

ST*U, pls. Kaithnx.

Happy, happy! Joy, joy!

Happy fourth Thursday in November to Americans.

Jamilla, I hope that you, too, wind up having a good day. This is one of our nicer national holidays. It's not wrapped up in any great commercial pressure. How nice it is to have this day to enjoy family, friends, food, and just plain take a moment to realize how thankful we are for the simple things, which are so often taken for granted.

We have 365 1/4 days per year which are NOT set aside as days to reflect on the many things, large and small, for which we are each thankful. No one says, "Happy Thanksgiving" with an intent to insult or convert.

Jamilla, I appreciate your sensitivity to the feelings of others. Obviously, this is a subject which has touched you and influenced how you personally view this day. Perhaps if you had formulated your post as a question and asked if others had heard of or considered that viewpoint, it would not have insulted so many of us. Unfortunately, by stating your topic as a command, you came across more like a snotty brat, thus inviting attack. Was that intentional? I hope that it was only a naive mistake and that you eventually learn that people are more easily educated when they are not first cajoled into being defensive.

All in all, this subject isn't even applicable to a pre-allo board, though, is it?

I'm sorry sooners prevented Texas from having much to be thankful for after the Red river shootout this year. But you'll have plenty of extra christmas shopping time since you won't be playing next saturday. :meanie:

No commercial pressure? What about Black Friday? Where I'm at I've seen Christmas decorations up a week before Thanksgiving. I've talked to so many people who do the whole shopping thing as part of their family ritual. Not my cup of tea, but from my point of view half the time Thanksgiving just seems like a stepping stone into the holiday shopping season.

Many of my Thanksgivings have been vaguely uncomfortable, though. I'm trapped at a long dinner with relatives I don't particularly like. Wonderful. I managed to enjoy it this time, which was a pleasant surprise.

And I'd say a good chunk of those Thanksgiving myths seem like conclusions that any logical person with more than an elementary education in history, religion, and a little bit of agriculture could reach. Regardless, Thanksgiving is a day where you can eat a lot of good food. That's a good part of it. I mean, if you think about it outside of the whole native american bit it's essentially a harvest festival which is an even older cultural tradition.

So have a happy Thanksgiving regardless.

Bor da, Thanksgiving DAY isn't very commercialized compared to almost every other holiday. In fact, it's almost totally ignored. The day after, and every day until after the first of January, is part of the most commercialized season of the year.

I stay home. My entire family helps cook. We enjoy each other and the company of friends today. There was not a single robo sales call ringing the phone today. We only study if we feel like it.😀 It's one of the best days of the year.

Actually, I don't know if today or yesterday was better. Yesterday I got to chop the head off my rooster and then pluck and clean him. Ahhhh, my FIRST TIME - what a memory! So, today I got to sleep in without being wakened at 5AM with his crowing. Yes, I had much to be thankful for today!

Sorry, for those of you who feel like time spent with relatives is an annoyance. I come from a rather large family. Nine of us are living in the house right now, and I have some older sibs who have married and moved away. We really enjoy any time we can spend together.

I'm glad to hear that your day with your own relative was happier than usual.

Happy Thanksgiving!

In Communist Russia, you do not watch TV, TV watches you......

no no it's:

In Communist Russia TV watches you!

I think we should turn this thread around. Lets talk about how annoying it is when people don't use apostrophes in their contractions.

Oh man, that rooster bit sounds AWESOME. It's been a desire of mine for a while to cook something from the most basic state possible--deboning, defeathering, the whole deal. I'm rather jealous. But these are the travails of a metropolitan area XD

To be fair, a lot of the awkwardness comes from political/philosophical divergences. My immediate family is quite liberal compared to my mom's family, the ones I spend thanksgiving with. I'm afraid that any thing I say about my studies (biochemistry and religion) will set off my mom's family. And I'm introverted to begin with, and by extension, terrible with small talk. Today, fortunately, my little chats about genomics went over their heads and the chats about religion involved only a benign discussion of religious diversity in India. I got to talk about what I liked to them and I didn't get criticized for it. That was what made me happy (in addition to the food).

And I've worked on Thanksgiving several times in the past (I worked in a grocery store, as a cashier and later as a bookkeeper) and seeing the way people deal with everything on Thanksgiving has probably colored my view quite a bit. At some point people didn't seem to care that I had a home and a family and a meal I wanted to get back to, and I was just another cog in the machine. It was a pseudo-gourmet grocery store, too, and no one seemed very thankful or considerate of anything.

I guess the commercialization that I was thinking of was the fact that it is completely ignored in the larger pantheon of American holidays, when in theory it's one of the sweetest, heartwarming days there are. It's commercialized in the sense that it's just a stepping stone between Halloween and Christmas, I suppose. I would love for stores to take a bit more time off for Thanksgiving, to hold off on Christmas decorations, and to actually guarantee a closed day.

I'm probably slightly cynical for this discussion 😛

Actually, now that I think harder we are both wrong:

In Soviet Russia TV watches you!

As a Native American, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone on SDN!! I have waaaaay more important things to worry about than something that happened 500 years ago. Now, get out there! It's Black Friday, I'm heading off to go shopping right now!

Exactly.

If we're going to whine about holidays being offensive to Native Americans, perhaps we should focus on Columbus Day. Native Americans actually protest Columbus Day in Denver, so until there are riots here on Thanksgiving, I'm not terribly concerned.

Uuuuugh, it's these super hypocritical PC-types where anything and everything is potentially "offensive" that scare the crap out of me.

I hope I never meet you in the real world...but unfortunately there are others like you.

I am getting so sick of this "be careful or you'll offend someone" crap. Political correctness is overrated. People need to suck it up and grow thicker skins. Just assume that anybody who is rude or offensive is ignorant and move on. It's a waste of your time and energy to get all worked up over it and start preaching about how wrong people are. Just have a Happy F&$%ing Thanksgiving and enjoy your day off work or school, everyone. Geez.
